[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) New imaging capabilities have given rise to higher dimensional image processing. This paper presents a generalization of total variation (tv) based denoising model with a specific application to three-dimensional flash lidar imagery. The generalization uses a weighted norm, rather than the standard Euclidean measure, that accounts for sampling differences that may exist along different axes. We compare this new method against successive two-dimensional denoising and three-dimensional TV denoising. The results show that denoising with a weighted norm presents much better object recognition for multi-plane objects compared with both of the other methods. Further, it does not blur single plane objects beyond the result obtained with two-dimensional denoising. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) We are currently developing a vision-based system aiming to perform a fully automatic pipeline for in situ photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) modeling of previously unknown, complex and unstructured underground environments. Since in such environments navigation sensors are not reliable, our system embeds only passive (camera) and active (laser) 3D vision senors. Laser Range Finders are particularly well suited for generating dense 3D maps by aligning multiples scans acquired from different viewpoints. Nevertheless, nowadays Iteratively Closest Point (ICP)-based scan matching techniques rely on heavy human operator intervention during a post-processing step. Since a human operator cannot access the site, these techniques are not suitable in high-risk underground environments. This paper presents an automatic on-line scan matcher able to cope with the nowadays 3D laser scanners’ architecture and to process either intensity or depth data to align scans, providing robustness with respect to the capture device. The proposed implementation emphasizes the portability of our algorithm on either single or multi-core embedded platforms for on-line mosaicing onboard 3D scanning devices. The proposed approach addresses key issues for in situ 3D modeling in difficult-to-access and unstructured environments and solves for the 3D scan matching problem within an environment-independent solution. Several tests performed in two prehistoric caves illustrate the reliability of the proposed method. [Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (Auteur) Small-footprint (0.2–2 m) airborne laser scanners are lidar instruments originally developed for topographic mapping. While the first airborne laser scanners only allowed determining the range from the sensor to the target, the latest sensor generation records the complete echo waveform. The waveform provides important information about the backscattering properties of the observed targets and may be useful for geophysical parameter retrieval and advanced geometric modelling. However, to fully utilise the potential of the waveform measurements in applications, it is necessary to perform a radiometric calibration. As there are not yet calibration standards, this paper reviews some basic physical concepts commonly used by the remote sensing community for modelling scattering and reflection processes. Based purely on theoretical arguments it is recommended to use the backscattering coefficient ?, which is the backscatter cross-section normalised relative to the laser footprint area, for the radiometric calibration of small-footprint full-waveform airborne laser scanners. The presented concepts are, with some limitations, also applicable to conventional airborne laser scanners that measure the range and intensity of multiple echoes. [Termes IGN] stockage de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The advent of LIDAR sensors has been valuable for the geospatial industry, but as the community attemps to fully leverage the technology it has faced some unique challenges regarding the best way to organize and store the data so it can be used most efficiently. In 2002, the LASer (LAS) format arrived on the geospatial scene as the first real solution featuring interoperability, compact and efficient data storage, and flexibility. Under the auspices of ASPRS it has grown into the de facto standard for storing this kind of data and staying on the top by matching the technological strides of the industry it serves.
