[...] The product of ALS is a cloud of points in 3D space. ALS is capable of delivering very dense and accurate point clouds of a landscape in a relatively short time. [...] However, the automatic detection and interpretation of individual objects remains a challenge. [...] Several algorithms have been developed to automatically detect the bare earth in ALS point clouds. An experimental study of filtering algorithms determined that in flat and uncomplicated landscapes, algorithms tend to do well. Significant differences in accuracies of filtering appear in landscapes containing steep slopes and discontinuties. These differences are a result of the ability of algorithms to preserve discontinuties while detecting large objects. A solution for this problem was determined to lie in the segmentation of ALS point clouds. If segmentation can be achieved in such a manner that all bare earth points are gathered into their own surface segments, then filtering can be done on the basis of surfaces rather than points. This should offer a more reliable classification since topological information can be used in addition to geometric information to classify surface segments. On the strenght of the study, a new segmentation based filtering algorithm was developed. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'objetRésumé : (auteur) 3D Geographic Information and especially Digital Surface or Terrain Models are becoming essential data for many applications, from risk mapping (avalanches, volcanoes, floods, ..) to town and infrastructure planning with virtual and augmented reality. Automatic surface reconstruction from images with shape from stereo techniques has been a subject of constant attention within remote sensing, photogrammetric, image processing and computer vision communities since the 70's. These techniques had reached a limit when addressing scenes with poor textures, discontinuities and occlusions as encountered in urban areas with HR geospatial imagery. These limitations have faded lately with the rise of new technologies (e.g. high quality aerial digital cameras) and techniques (e.g multi-view processing) and consequently expectations of full (or nearly) automation at short term have become a trend again. Meanwhile, LASER scanning technologies, which provide a reliable description of the imaged scenes in the form of 3D cloud points, have achieved a certain degree of maturity. [Termes IGN] modèle de régressionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a new filtering method of non-ground measurements from airborne LIDAR data through a Simultaneous Auto-Regressive (SAR) analytical model and exploiting a Foward Search (FS) algorithm. In SAR models, with respect to classical spatial regression models, the correlation among adjacent measured points is taken into account, by considering two quantities for the measured dataset : a coefficient of spatial interaction and matrix of point adjacency (binary digits for regular grids or real numbers for irregular ones). The method has been implemented using Matlab® language and applied either to differently simulated LIDAR datasets or really measured points, these last acquired with an Optech® ALTM 3033 system in the city of Gorizia (North-east Italy). [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Filtering the airborne laser scanner data is challenging due to the complex distribution of objects on Earth's surface and it is still in development stage. This problem has been investigated so far with varieties of algorithms, but they suffer from different magnitudes of drawbacks. This study proposed a new and improved hybrid method based on multi-resolution analysis. Wavelet was adopted in this multi-resolution clustering approach. It enabled the classification of objects based on their size and the efficiency to filter out unwanted information at a specific resolution, and the proposed algorithm is named the ALSwave (Airborne Laser Scanner Wavelet) method. ALSwave has been tested on two data sets acquired over the urban areas of Tokyo, Japan and Stuttgart, Germany. The results showed a well-filtered, bare earth surface coupled with acceptable computational time. The accuracy assessment was carried out by comparison between the filtered bare earth surface by ALSwave and the manually filtered surface. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) follows a linear relationship with respect to terrain slope. This wavelet-based approach has opened a new way to filter the raw laser data that subsequently generates fast and more accurate digital terrain models.
