[Termes IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (Auteur) As third-party lidar software manufacturers are increasingly adding support for full-waveform data, a common question is which algorithm(s) to implement. To this end, a new approach is needed to compare and contrast various lidar waveform processing strategies from a practical, operational perspective. Quality and type of information output, processing speed, suitability for particular applications, robustness against poor parameter selection, and more subjective measures related to user experience are of interest. This paper describes a new empirical method of comparing range extraction and discrimination performance of different algorithms, based on a ranging-lab setup with multiple, adjustable screen targets, with precisely-measured separations. We present the results of comparing three different algorithms described in the scientific literature. The results show distinct differences and also indicate that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach: the choice of a specific algorithm and adjustable parameter settings are highly application-dependent. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a method for individual tree crown extraction and characterisation from a canopy surface model (CSM). The method is based on a conventional algorithm used for localising LM on a smoothed version of the CSM and subsequently for modelling the tree crowns around each maximum at the plot level. The novelty of the approach lies in the introduction of controls on both the degree of CSM filtering and the shape of elliptic crowns, in addition to a multi-filtering level crown fusion approach to balance omission and commission errors. The algorithm derives the total tree height and the mean crown diameter from the elliptic tree crowns generated. The method was tested and validated on a mountainous forested area mainly covered by mature and even-aged black pine (Pinus nigra ssp. nigra [Arn.]) stands. Mean stem detection per plot, using this method, was 73.97%. Algorithm performance was affected slightly by both stand density and heterogeneity (i.e. tree diameter classes’ distribution). The total tree height and the mean crown diameter were estimated with root mean squared error values of 1.83 m and 1.48 m respectively. Tree heights were slightly underestimated in flat areas and overestimated on slopes. The average crown diameter was underestimated by 17.46% on average. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Nearly three-quarters of the territory of Taiwan and 95% of its population are exposed to frequent hazard. In the aftermath of typhoon Morakot that scourged Southern Taiwan on 8th and 9th august 2009, causing the worst flooding in a century, the authorities realized that the country was dreadfully lacking in detailed, accurate and current elevation data, as well as aerial imagery covering the entire territory (36 000 km2). In response, a national mapping program spanning 2010 to 2015 was launched with the aim of simultaneously capturing the entire country airborne Lidar and digital imagery. The authors discuss specifications, status and challenges posed by this large-scale, long-term project. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a novel approach to building roof modeling, including roof plane segmentation and roof model reconstruction, from airborne laser scanning data. Segmentation is performed by minimizing an energy function formulated as multiphase level set. The energy function is minimized when each segment corresponds to one or several roof plans of the same normal vector. With this formulation, maximum n regions are segmented at a time by applying log2n level set functions. The roof ridges or step edges are then delineated by the union of the zero level contours of the level set functions. In the final step of segmentation, coplanar and parallel roof segments are separated into individual roof segments based on their connectivity and homogeneity. To reconstruct a 3D roof model, roof structure points are determined by intersecting adjacent roof segments or line segments of building boundary and then connected based on their topological relations inferred from the segmentation result. As a global solution to the segmentation problem, the proposed approach determines multiple roof segments at the same time, which leads to topological consistency among the segment boundaries. The paper describes the principle and solution of the multiphase level set approach and demonstrates its performance and properties with two airborne laser scanning data sets.
