[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Although the Historic Peninsula of old Istanbul was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, complete documentation of this important area has not yet been carried out. In 2006 the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Historical Environment Protection Directorate initiated the "Historic Peninsula Project", which covers an area of 1500 ha and includes approximately 48 000 buildings in crowded and frequently narrow streets. BI.MTAS, a company owned by the Municipality, immediately started the documentation of all buildings in the project area using terrestrial laser scanning. This created the challenge of building up an efficient production environment with new high-end technology to fulfill the requirements of this project in a very short timeframe of 2 years. This paper describes the entire production environment for documentation of all buildings, detailing the frequent adaptations of the process resulting from learning on the job. Although the data acquisition and mapping environment was established in the course of production, it was always essential to optimise the technical solutions in order to meet the requirements for data quality and delivery deadlines. Only 80 ha of the required 1500 ha was completed using static scanning during the first 6 months, thus requiring a change from static to mobile terrestrial laser scanning in order to accelerate the work and to conclude the scanning phase for the remaining major area within 3 months. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar systems have been widely adopted for the acquisition of dense and accurate topographic data over extended areas. The level of detail and the quality of the collected point cloud motivated the research community to investigate the possibility of automatic object extraction from such data. Prior knowledge of the terrain surface will improve the performance of object detection and extraction procedures. In this paper, a new strategy for automatic terrain extraction from lidar data is presented. The proposed strategy is based on the fact that sudden elevation changes, which usually correspond to non-ground objects, will cause relief displacements in perspective views. The introduced relief displacements will occlude neighboring ground points. To start the process, we generate a digital surface model (DSM) from the irregular lidar points using an interpolation procedure. The presence of sudden-elevation changes and the resulting occlusions can be discerned by sequentially checking the off-nadir angles to the lines of sight connecting the DSM cells and a pre-defined set of synthesized projection centers. Detected occlusions are then used to identify the occluding points, which are hypothesized to be non-ground points. Surface roughness and discontinuities together with inherent noise in the point cloud will lead to some false hypotheses. Therefore, we use a statistical filter to remove these false hypotheses. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated and verified using both simulated and real lidar datasets with varying levels of complexity. [Termes IGN] trajectographie par GPSRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar (laser scanning) technology has been proven as a prominent technique for the acquisition of high-density and accurate topographic information. Because of systematic errors in the lidar measurements (drifts in the position and orientation information and biases in the mirror angles and ranges) and/or in the parameters relating the system components (mounting parameters), adjacent lidar strips may exhibit discrepancies. Although position and orientation drifts can have a more significant impact, these errors and their impact do not come as a surprise if the quality of the GPS/INS integration process is carefully examined. Therefore, the mounting errors are singled out in this work. The ideal solution for improving the compatibility of neighbouring strips in the presence of errors in the mounting parameters is the implementation of a rigorous calibration procedure. However, such a calibration requires the original observations, which may not be usually available. In this paper, a strip adjustment procedure to improve the compatibility between parallel lidar strips with moderate flight dynamics (for example, acquired by a fixed-wing aircraft) over an area with moderately varying elevation is proposed. The proposed method is similar to the photogrammetric block adjustment of independent models. Instead of point features, planar patches and linear features, which are represented by sets of non-conjugate points, are used for the strip adjustment. The feasibility and the performance of the proposed procedure together with its impact on subsequent activities are illustrated using experimental results from real data.
