[Termes IGN] webGLRésumé : (auteur) For a long time people have been interested in the past and history and how we can go back in time using a time machine. And while we cannot invent a time machine, at least not yet, we can create a virtual one. Our ”virtual” time machine is an interactive web application that allows users to browse through and navigate within historical images (aerial/terrestrial photographs or postcards) that are projected on a 3D photogrammetric model (point cloud or 3D mesh), thus going back in time and interacting with historical 3D models and images. This was achieved by adopting a semiautomatic approach where the user identifies first 6 to 8 hints on the historical image and the photogrammetric model, then this information is used as an entry data to a photogrammetric software that computes the pose and orientation of the image. The purpose of this work, which is part of the ALEGORIA project, is to preserve cultural heritage, to give the users the opportunity to go back in time and study history of a place or simply discover howtheir hometown looked some years ago. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents an investigation as to whether and how the selection of the SfM-MVS software affects the 3D reconstruction of submerged archaeological sites. Specifically, Agisoft Photoscan, VisualSFM, SURE, 3D Zephyr and Reality Capture software were used and evaluated according to their performance in 3D reconstruction using specific metrics over the reconstructed underwater scenes. It must be clarified that the scope of this study is not to evaluate specific algorithms or steps that the various software use, but to evaluate the final results and specifically the generated 3D point clouds. To address the above research issues, a dataset from the ancient shipwreck, laying at 45 meters below sea level, is used. The dataset is composed of 19 images having very small camera to object distance (1 meter), and 42 images with higher camera to object distance (3 meters) images. Using a common bundle adjustment for all 61 images, a reference point cloud resulted from the lower dataset is used to compare it with the point clouds of the higher dataset generated using the different photogrammetric packages. Following that, a comparison regarding the number of total points, cloud to cloud distances, surface roughness, surface density and a combined 3D metric was done to evaluate and see which one performed the best. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) precise point positioning (PPP) on a fixed‐wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is demonstrated for photogrammetric mapping at accuracies of centimetres in planimetry and about a decimetre in height, from flights of 25 to 30 minutes in duration. The GPS PPP estimated camera station positions are used to constrain estimates of image positions in the photogrammetric bundle block adjustment, as with relative GPS positioning. GPS PPP alleviates all spatial operating constraints associated with the installation and the use of ground control points, a local ground GPS reference station or the need to operate within the bounds of a permanent GPS reference station network. This simplifies operational logistics and enables large‐scale photogrammetric mapping from UAVs in even the most remote and challenging geographic locations. [Termes IGN] zone polaireRésumé : (auteur) Stretching time series further in the past with the best possible accuracy is essential to the understanding of climate change impacts and geomorphological processes evolving on decadal-scale time spans. In the first half of the twentieth century, large parts of the polar regions were still unmapped or only superficially so. To create cartographic data, a number of historic photogrammetric campaigns were conducted using oblique imagery, which is easier to work with in unmapped environments as collocating images is an easier task for the human eye given a more familiar viewing angle and a larger field of view. Even if the data obtained from such campaigns gave a good baseline for the mapping of the area, the precision and accuracy are to be considered with caution. Exploiting the possibilities arising from modern image processing tools and reprocessing the archives to obtain better data is therefore a task worth the effort. The oblique angle of view of the data is offering a challenge to classical photogrammetric tools, but the use of modern structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry offers an efficient and quantitative way to process these data into terrain models. In this paper, we propose a good practice method for processing historical oblique imagery using free and open source software (MicMac and Python) and illustrate the process using images of the Svalbard archipelago acquired in 1936 by the Norwegian Polar Institute. On these data, our workflow provides 5 m resolution, high-quality elevation data (SD 2 m for moderate terrain) as well as orthoimages that allow for the reliable quantification of terrain change when compared to more modern data.
