It is sometimes mentioned that cylindrical and azimuthal projections can be interpreted as limiting cases of conic, but this is rarely proven. The goal of this article is to show in a rigorous and systematic way how to generally approach solving the problem of transition from a conic to a corresponding cylindrical projection. This article points to the fact that J. H. Lambert showed as early as 1772 that a conformal cylindrical projection is created from a conformal conic projection. Following his idea, this paper shows that not only conformal, but also equal-area and equidistant cylindrical projections can be derived from corresponding conic map projections. Although it seems that the paper deals with quite well known and intuitive property of conic projections, it will also show that the transition from the conic to the corresponding cylindrical projection is not always possible. [Termes IGN] Python (langage de programmation)Résumé : (auteur) Selecting a map projection is key to minimizing distortion and thus clear communication of spatial data and accurate spatial analysis. Methods exist for selecting projections based on the intended area of use but not for finding polygons that can be used to clip geographic data to ensure the data are projected correctly and within desired distortion limits. The projection methods available in the Proj library were examined to determine the nature of the errors and distortions they created based on global data and a wide variety of available settings. Approaches were then identified for each projection including simple bounding boxes and more complex clipping polygons. To make sure that errors were not introduced into the projected data, data integrity polygons (DIPs) were created by placing a grid of cells over the Earth and then finding a cell near the origin that was within the specified criteria. Adjacent cells were added to the DIPs that met the criteria until no additional cells could be added. The criteria included projected cell sides could not intersect with themselves or other cells, the order of the cell corners could not be reversed, and distortion within the cell had to be within specified limits. I found that up to two DIPs with a limit on length distortion of a factor of 4 provided a general solution for all but three projection methods. Limitations included the time to find DIPs at high resolution. Clipping polygons and visualizations of the results were made available on a website. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Topographic maps (1:40,000) used by the British Army on the Western Front in World War 1 had a five-part Grid Reference System consisting of: (1) Map Number; (2) Letter-Square – 24 letter squaresA to X on each map; (3) Number-Square – 36 (and sometimes 30) 1000-yard squares in each letter square; (4) Minor-Square – four 500-yard squares denoted a, b, c, d in each number square; (5) Small-Square – 10 × 10 = 100 small-squares in a minor-square. Letter and number grid Woesten references (e.g. X: 28.A.6.b.73) cannot be used by modern GPS navigation devices that require geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) or current map grid coordinates. This paper provides the background behind this project and demonstrates a method of transforming WW1 grid references to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates using Google Maps to obtain geographical coordinates, Geographic to UTM grid conversion and a 2D Conformal transformation. As well, it provides a ‘snapshot’ of practical methods that were used to develop a software package that would allow amateur military historians to convert the WW1 Grid Reference System to contemporary coordinates. [Termes IGN] transformation de HelmertRésumé : (auteur) The geometry of Adriatic Sea basin renderings on 12 portolan charts made from the late thirteenth to the late sixteenth century was compared to a modern map by applying Helmert transformation in order to preserve their initial geometry and by using the same 40 identical points per chart. In the first stage of the research, the geometry of the portolan charts was compared to six selected map projections in order to determine the geometrical ‘best fit'. In the second stage, networks of lines plotted on charts were divided regionally and functionally and compared to the ‘best fit’ map projection to determine their geometric patterns in more detail. The research results showed that Adriatic Sea basin renderings on portolan charts were probably the result of a deliberately applied map projection which was geometrically most similar to the modern conformal cylindrical (Mercator) projection. [Termes IGN] transformation inverseRésumé : (auteur) A Lambert Conformal Conic (LCC) projection with two true-scale parallels of latitudes ϕl and ϕu can be recast in a LCC projection with one standard parallel of latitude ϕ0 and scale k0, having the practical advantage that the same type of definition can be used for the two conformal projections universally used: LCC and Transverse Mercator (TM). While equations giving ϕ0 and k0 in terms ϕl and ϕu can be found in the literature, inverse relationships are not readily found. They are derived in the present paper. These may be necessary in views of the planned future definition of the United States State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS) 2022 for the users of particular mapping software requiring to specify the two latitude values instead of the central latitude and central scale. While map projection parameters are customary selected to minimise ellipsoid-to-grid distortions for a region, in some cases it could be more convenient to study and minimise ground-to-grid distortions. Also bearing in mind the design of SPCS 2022, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working with each type of distortion definition.
