[Termes IGN] personne malvoyanteRésumé : (auteur) Tactile colour codes or tactile symbols were developed for communicating colours to blind people. Initially, these colour codes were designed to enable blind or visually impaired people to choose their own clothes and learn colour theory. The objective of this research is to investigate the perspectives of geoinformation professionals on the viability of implementing colour codes on thematic tactile maps using only the graphic primitive area. Thus, geoinformation professionals were invited to express their perspectives on ten colour code systems during and after the “I Workshop Usability 4 All”, which took place during the “XI Brazilian Colloquium on Geodetic Sciences”, Brazil, 2020. The results indicated that there is no consensus on which system is more appropriate for experimentation on tactile maps. However, Feelipa Color and See Color were the systems that showed the greatest potential as six participants preferred the first and five preferred the latter. This is associated with the fact that both systems were classified as relatively viable or potentially viable for implementation in the primitive area, considering the aspects of Drawing, Dimensions and Intuitiveness. Sharing is typically achieved through interactive tools, either desktop or web-based, in which map displays play an essential role. That role can be further strengthened if (1) agreed emergency symbols that are used in map-based interactive tools are sufficient to encode multifaceted operational information visually; and (2) the symbols are legible and meaningful for the diverse users of those tools. The authors revisited official emergency map symbols in use in Norway and reconsidered them against current requirements. To this end, they first conducted several meetings with stakeholders to elicit adequate revision requirements. Next, the reconsideration included the extension of the symbol set, symbol modification, and grouping. After the reconsideration, emergency management officers and specialists were interviewed. The interviews confirmed the agreement with the symbol categorization, extension of the symbols, and their modifications. The interviewees also made numerous suggestions to be considered in a follow-up study. Moreover, two concepts – symbol standardization and symbol harmonization – were proposed. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The legends of natural resource taxonomy-based maps (e.g. soil, geological, geomorphological, vegetation, and land cover/land use) need many different distinguishable colors. The existing methods of color selection for map legends are based on the designer subjectivity, ensuring schemes having few colors. An analysis of the modeling and management of colors in digital applications has led to define an algorithm to calculate an objective colorimetric measure of color difference – “DE*ab” – based on the perceptually uniform color model CIELAB. The proposed method consists of a set of specific rules for developing hierarchically structured color schemes and a specific procedure for ensuring selection of a large number of reliably distinguishable colors, based on a color difference threshold. The accuracy of color reproduction in printing processes is also taken into account. The method has been applied to develop a standard of colors for soil maps. It contains 63 colors and has been used for developing a soil map having 41 standard colors. A user test of the method results proved that thresholds of 10 DE*ab units and 15 DE*ab units ensure obtaining acceptably distinguishable colors for displaying/printing maps by using high-quality, respectively, current devices. However, most existing methods for evaluating map colors are tedious and subjective manual methods. In this paper, we study sequential color schemes, a widely used map color type and propose a learning-based approach for evaluating the color quality. The approach consists of two steps. First, we extract and characterize the cartographic factors for determining the quality of sequential color schemes, such as color order, color match, color harmony, color discrimination and color uniformity. Second, we present a model to predict the color quality based on AdaBoost, a type of ensemble learning algorithm with excellent classification performance and use these factors as input data. We conduct a case study based on 781 samples and train the AdaBoost-based model to predict the quality of sequential color schemes. To evaluate the model’s performance, we calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The AUC values are 0.983 and 0.977 on the training data and testing data, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed approach can be used to automatically evaluate the quality of sequential color schemes for maps, which helps mapmakers select good colors. However, the enumeration unit size and its influence on pattern conveying in choropleth maps have not yet been the subject of in-depth empirical studies. This research aims to address this gap. We focused on the issue concerning whether the ability to recognize spatial patterns on an Equal Area Unit Map is related to the hexagonal enumeration unit size, defined by the number of pixels. The aim is to indicate the range of the enumeration unit sizes, namely, at what point the upper and lower borders of the range where the spatial patterns start, and where the end is visible and recognizable by users. To address this problem, we conducted an empirical study with 488 users. The results show that the enumeration unit size has an impact on the users’ spatial pattern recognition abilities. Choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 26, 52, and 104 pixels were, in the majority, indicated by participants as those most suitable for indicating spatial patterns. This was in contrast to choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 1664 and 3328 pixels, which users indicated as not being useful. However, there were some exceptions to this general finding. Thus, determining the optimal enumeration unit size is a challenging task, and requires further insightful investigations.
