From the literature, it is found that only one study was dedicated to the building of cartographic rules for effective legend design, and no systematic investigations into the building of grouping rules for proper determination of the grouping of legend features (symbols + text descriptions) had been carried out. This study is therefore devoted to the building of grouping rules based on Gestalt laws. An experimental evaluation of these developed rules was designed and conducted. The results indicate that a legend designed by considering these new rules is significantly more efficient than the others violating these rules. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Symbol sharing that is facilitated by current technologies is hampered by the incompatibility of current map-symbol models with existing heterogeneous map-symbol resources. After a comparative analysis of the terminology and symbol construction strategies in existing map-symbol models, an improved model is presented to facilitate symbol sharing. The model combines current symbol description methods to enable broad compatibility with heterogeneous mapping/geographic information systems (GISs). Extensional map-symbol construction strategies have also been proposed to support various symbols with different levels of graphic complexity. Topographic, traffic, and OpenStreetMap symbol resources are used to validate the interoperability and compatibility of this model. Its compatibility was validated with a case study of ArcGIS, and its interoperation was validated with a case study of ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and CorelDraw. The results indicate that the map-symbol model is flexible for use with different map-symbol variants and compatible with existing description methods and that it can be used as a common model for sharing heterogeneous map-symbol resources. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (auteur) Customized mapping needs to rely on a strategy to help mapmakers in designing their maps. Our approach is based on analogy between existing sample maps and the wished customized map. The challenge consists in being able to offer the appropriate maps according to each mapmaker’s specifications. We have focused on the perception of seven selected visual properties of maps. To qualify this perception, a user test was set up. A sample map database was built in order to collect assessment of participants about visual properties. Test results were investigated through property and by statistical features. Analyses show that among properties, some are scored as more extreme and/or unanimous than others. Correlations between properties were also highlighted, which clarifies the characterization of sample maps. We then suggested a way to discover the database in a custom-made map process by using relevant queries based on statistical features of properties. Recommendations on exploiting a sample map database are finally formulated. [Termes IGN] placement automatique des écrituresRésumé : (auteur) The text management in map design is a topic generally linked to placement and composition issues. Whereas the type design issue is rarely addressed or at least only partially. Moreover the typefaces especially designed for maps are rare. This paper presents a protocol of tests to evaluate characters for digital topographic maps and fonts that were designed for the screen through the use of geographical information systems using this protocol. It was launched by the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique Research (ANRT, located in Nancy, France) and took place over his ‘post-master’ course in 2013. The purpose is to isolate different issues inherent to text in a topographic map: map background, nonlinear text placement and toponymic hierarchies. Further research is necessary to improve this kind of approach. [Termes IGN] optimisation (mathématiques)
[Termes IGN] placement automatique des écrituresRésumé : (Auteur) Label placement is a tedious task in map design, and its automation has long been a goal for researchers in cartography, but also in computational geometry. Methods that search for an optimal or nearly optimal solution that satisfies a set of constraints, such as label overlapping, have been proposed in the literature. Most of these methods mainly focus on finding the optimal position for a given set of labels, but rarely allow the removal of labels as part of the optimization. This paper proposes to apply an optimization technique called Reversible-Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo that enables to easily model the removal or addition during the optimization iterations. The method, quite preliminary for now, is tested on a real dataset, and the first results are encouraging.
