[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Canada's new electoral order of 338 districts, updated in October 2013, was in effect for the October 2015 federal election. A Web GIS application was developed using the new electoral map to display seat projections generated by the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy (LISPOP). Seat projections convert, or “project,” public opinion support for the major political parties into a distribution of electoral seats for each party, based on a detailed analysis of an aggregation of polls. The map was published through ArcGIS Server, and coding language HTML and JavaScript implemented the required functions. Two key interactive features of the map include: (1) pop-up windows that provide the 2011 election result and LISPOP's current seat projection when hovering over a constituency; and (2) a drop-down menu that direct users to a desired region. The use of ArcGIS software enables fast and effective updates before and during the election. [Termes IGN] logiciel libreRésumé : (Auteur) When conducting research within a framework of Geographic Information Science (GISc), the scientific validity of this work can be argued as highly dependent upon the extent to which the methods employed are reproducible, and that, in the strictest sense, can only be fully achieved by implementing transparent workflows that utilize both open source software and openly available data. After considering the scientific implications of non-reproducible methods, we provide a review of both open source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and openly available data, before describing an integrated model for Open GISc. We conclude with a critical review of this embryonic paradigm, with directions for future development in supporting spatial data infrastructure. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) An automatic estimate of the number of attendees to events happening in the city can provide valuable information to geographic information systems and geo-located applications. We present a methodology to estimate the number of events’ attendees from cellular network data. In this work, we used anonymized Call Detail Records (CDRs) comprising data on where and when users access the cellular network. Our approach is based on two key ideas: (1) we identify the network cells associated with the event location. (2) We verify the attendance of each user, as a measure of whether (s)he generates CDRs during the event, but not during other times. We evaluate our approach to estimate the number of attendees to a number of events ranging from football matches in stadiums to concerts and festivals in open squares. Comparing our results with the best groundtruth data available, our estimates provide a median error of less than 15% of the actual number of attendees. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Given a grid of cells each having an associated cost value, a raster version of the least-cost path problem seeks a sequence of cells connecting two specified cells such that its total accumulated cost is minimized. Identifying least-cost paths is one of the most basic functions of raster-based geographic information systems. Existing algorithms are useful if the path width is assumed to be zero or negligible compared to the cell size. This assumption, however, may not be valid in many real-world applications ranging from wildlife corridor planning to highway alignment. This paper presents a method to solve a raster-based least-cost path problem whose solution is a path having a specified width in terms of Euclidean distance (rather than by number of cells). Assuming that all cell values are positive, it does so by transforming the given grid into a graph such that each node represents a neighborhood of a certain form determined by the specified path width, and each arc represents a possible transition from one neighborhood to another. An existing shortest path algorithm is then applied to the graph. This method is highly efficient, as the number of nodes in the transformed graph is not more than the number of cells in the given grid and decreases with the specified path width. However, a shortcoming of this method is the possibility of generating a self-intersecting path which occurs only when the given grid has an extremely skewed distribution of cost values.
