[Termes IGN] système multi-agentsRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this paper is to present a spatially explicit agent-based simulation framework with a supporting software package to explore complex adaptive geographic systems. This framework is particularly suitable for modeling entities that are contextually aware, knowledge driven, and adaptive because it represents them as geographically aware intelligent agents. Fundamental advances in the explicit representation of contextual information, knowledge structures, and learning processes are needed for modeling intelligent agents situated within geographic systems. The representation of these agents requires the integration of agent-based models, machine learning, and GIS. Existing software packages for agent-based modeling, however, often provide insufficient support for this integration. The agent-based simulation package presented here is specifically designed to achieve such integration by assisting the development of agent-based models from the simulation framework. Object-oriented modeling techniques were used to implement this simulation package, which includes four modules: simulation, visualization, learning, and geoprocessing. In particular, the learning and geoprocessing modules facilitate the representation of adaptive behavior in agents within spatially explicit environments. The utility of the agent-based simulation package is illustrated using two simulation models: one of adaptive elk behavior and another of pedestrian movement. The successful design of the simulation models suggests that the modeling framework with the supporting software package is well suited to the resolution of complex adaptive geographic problems. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) We present the follow-up of our previously published work, where we described a wavelet-based method to characterize the sea surface backscatter structures in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The method relies on the ability of the 2-D continuous wavelet technique to detect the spatial structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) and to isolate wind-related cells and features. The analysis of the cells' geometry, molded by the radiometric characteristics of the sea surface, permits the identification of the wind direction inside the cells, due to the along-wind asymmetry of backscatter structures, and thus the computation of the wind speed through standard algorithms. Twenty-one SAR images (ERS-2 and Envisat ASAR Wide Swath) over the Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed, and the results are compared with satellite wind fields. The images cover a range of meteorological conditions from low to moderate winds. Comparison of the SAR-derived wind fields with those provided by satellite scatterometers indicates a good score of success (roughly 70%-80%). The developed methodology, once tested over an adequate number of images to derive statistically reliable results, could be routinely used to enrich SAR images with the wind field as well as to characterize the MABL in terms of size, distribution, and shape of the backscatter cells. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Object based image analysis (OBIA) is an approach increasingly used in classifying high spatial resolution remote sensing images. Object based image classifiers first segment an image into objects (or image segments), and then classify these objects based on their attributes and spatial relations. Numerous algorithms exist for the first step of the OBIA process, i.e. image segmentation. However, less research has been conducted on the object classification part of OBIA, in particular the spatial relations between objects that are commonly used to construct rules for classifying image objects and refining classification results. In this paper, we establish a context where objects are areal (not points or lines) and non-overlapping (we call this “single-valued” space), and propose a framework of binary spatial relations between segmented objects to aid in object classification. In this framework, scale-dependent “line-like objects” and “point-like objects” are identified from areal objects based on their shapes. Generally, disjoint and meet are the only two possible topological relations between two non-overlapping areal objects. However, a number of quasi- topological relations can be defined when the shapes of the objects involved are considered. Some of these relations are fuzzy and thus quantitatively defined. In addition, we define the concepts of line-like objects (e.g. roads) and point-like objects (e.g. wells), and develop the relations between two line-like objects or two point-like objects. For completeness, cardinal direction relations and distance relations are also introduced in the proposed context. Finally, we implement the framework to extract roads and moving vehicles from an aerial photo. The promising results suggest that our methods can be a valuable tool in defining rules for object based image analysis. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data have played an important role in global environmental and resource research. However, its low spatial resolution has been an impediment to researchers pursuing more accurate classification results. In this research, the high temporal resolution of MODIS was employed to improve the accuracy of land cover classification of the North China Plain using MODIS_EVI time series from 2003. Harmonic Analysis of Time Series (HANTS) was performed on the MODIS_EVI image time series to reduce cloud and other noise effects. The improved MODIS_EVI time series was then classified into 100 clusters by the Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique (ISODATA). To distinguish ambiguous land cover classes, a decision tree was built on five phenological features derived from EVI profiles, Land Surface Temperature (LST) and topographic slope. The overall accuracy of the final land cover map was 75.5%, indicating the promise of using MODIS EVI time series and decision trees for broad area land cover classification.
