[Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this work is to show an automatic method of cloud classification for direct application in civil aviation. We start from the premise of an acceptable trade-off between calculation speed and accuracy in the output data. For this reason, visible and infrared channels of the Meteosat satellite were used alongside data provided by the A/TOVS (Advanced/Tiros-N Operational Vertical Sounder) probe onboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) polar satellites. A historical database of mean temperatures at ground level was also used. The analysis of different significant synoptic and mesoscale situations highlighted the efficacy of this method in the representation of the different cloud structures that normally appear in these situations. Considering the results of the study and given its speed and accuracy, it can be concluded that the method is appropriate for monitoring cloud systems in real time. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (Auteur) Stop signs and speed limit signs (SLS) are the most popular and significant traffic signs on roadways. Unlike extracting stop signs with a distinct red color, extracting SLS in a realtime environment is much more challenging. This paper presents an algorithm for recognizing SLS from video imaging and extracting the numerical numbers of SLS to support real-time road inventory data collection operations. The algorithm consists of color segmentation based on locally adaptive thresholding extraction of regions of interest (ROI) using a depth-first-search algorithm, followed by speed limit sign detection and speed limit number extraction by means of optical character recognition and 2D correlation. The algorithm was implemented in Visual C++ language and tested on a non-Hyper-Threading Pentium IV PC with 3.06GHZ CPU using the images taken in the field with different image sizes. The average processing time for an image of 1200 X 800 pixels is about 125 ms. Experimental results from 1,401 video images show 0 percent false positives out of 1,278 images containing no SLS, and 3 percent false negatives out of 123 images containing SLS. [Termes IGN] zone intertropicaleRésumé : (Auteur) Pasture quality, expressed as a percentage of total digestible nutients (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium) is a major factor determining the grazing patterns of wildlife and livestock. Existing rangeland monitoring techniques seldom reflect the nutritive quality of the pastures and are consequently of limited value in explaining animal distribution. Techniques that can estimate pasture quality on a large scale are therefore critical in understanding and explaining wildlife and livestock distribution. We present the results of a greenhouse experiment designed to estimate the concentrations of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous calcium, magnesium and non-detergent fibre (NDF), using the reflectance of a tropical grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) canopy. Canopy spectral measurements were taken under controlled laboratory conditins using a GER 3700 spectroradiometer. We tested the utility of using the band depth analysis methodology in the visible region (where water absorption is less effective) to estimate foliar chemistry in fresh canopies. Continuum removal was applied to the visible absorption feature centred at 670 nm, and band depth ratios (BDRs) were calculated. Stepwise linear regression was used to select wavelenghts from calculated BDRs that were highly correlated with foliar chemistry in randomly selected training dataset. The resulting regression models were used to predict foliar chemistry in a test dataset. Results indicate that stepwise regression models on band calculated from continuum-removed reflectance spectra could predict foliar nutrient concentration with high accuracy. The correlations were highest for magnesium and nitrogen (R2= 0.77 and 0.73 respectively, using the normalized band depth index (NDBI) between the measured and estimated biochemicals - a satisfactory result in estimating foliar chemistry in fresh standing pastures. With the advent of new sensors such as Hymap and MERIS these results lay the basis for developing algorithms to rapidly estimate and ultimately map pasture quality in tropical rangelands. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Detecting landslides and monitoring their activity is of great relevance for disastrer prevention, preparedness and mitigation in hilly areas. To this end, change detection techniques were developed and applied to multi-temporal digital aerial photographs, simulating the very high spatial resolution of new satellite sensor optical imagery, over the Tessina complex landslide in north-eastern Italy. Several automatic thresholding algorithms are compared on the difference orthorectified and radiometrically normalized images, including some standard methods based on clustering, statistics, moment and entropy, as well as some more novel techniques previously developed by the authors. In addition, a variety of filters were employed to eliminate much of the underisable residual clutter in the thresholded difference image, mainly as a result of natural vegetation and man-land cover changes. These filters are based on shape and size properties of the connected sets of pixels in the threshold maps. This has enabled us discriminate most ground surface changes related to the movement of a pre-existing landslide. [Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) Different methodologies to estimate the amplitude of the sea surface temperature diurnal variation (DV) and remove it from remotly sensed SST images have been proposed in the last years. Among these, the parametrization proposed by Stuart-Menteth et al. (2004a, b) [...] published by the International GHRSST-PP Project-Office pp.241 appeared as the most promising. In fact, it takes into account wind and insolation variations during the day, that effectively drive the SST diurnal cycle. This parametrization has been tested on 6 months of NOAA-16 AVHRR images acquired and processed at CNR with Pathfinder algorithm. The tests evidenced some limits for a correct estimation of the DV in low-wind regimes for any insolation condition, and high insolation regimes (>600 W/m2 ) when the wind intensity increases of more than 2m/s during the morning. The limits of applicability of DV correction to NOAA-16 AVHRR data (at least for the Mediterranean area) were thus identified, and data outside these limits were flagged. However, some anomalous heating were not corrected even with these constraints, due to the lack of accuracy in the wind field used for the correction. As result, a strategy to flag residual outliers in the corrected daily images has been developed, based on the comparison to an optimally interpolated night SSt field of the previous day.
