[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Classification errors using texture are most likely associated with class edges, but investigators often avoid edges when evaluating textures for classification. The large window needed to produce a stable texture measure produce large edge effects. Small windows minimize edge effects, but often do not provide stable texture measures. Simulated data experiments showed that class separability increased when texture was used in addition to spectral information. Texture separability improved with larger windows. This improvement was over estimated when pixels were chosen away from class edges. Airborne Data Acquisition and Registration (ADAR) data showed that separability of class interiors improved with the addition of texture, but that, for the whole class, separability fell. Maximum-likelihood classification of the ADAR data demonstrated the effect of edges and multiple scales in reducing the accuracy of classification incorporating texture. [Termes IGN] image multibandeRésumé : (Auteur) The Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique (ISODATA) has been widely used in unsupervised and supervised classification. However, ISODATA suffers from several limitations. The user often spends much analyst time on specifying input parameters by trial and error, particularly initial cluster centers. Of more importance, an inapropriate choice of initial clusters may cause poor classification results. ISODATA is computationally intensive because of its iterative process . This study aimed to develop a synergistic automatic clustering technique (SYNERACT) that combined the hierachical descending and ISODATA clustering procedures to avoid those limitations. The two methods were compared using multispectral digitized video images. An inappropriate choice of initial seeds for SODATA was shown to reduce accuracies significantly. In contrast, SYNERACT was capable of determining the suitable locations for the initial clusters automatically from the data, therby avoiding those limitations. Owing to this capability, SYNERACT was not so heavily dependent on the iterative process as was ISODATA, and thus was much faster than ISODATA. SYNERACT also matched ISODATA in accuracy. Accordingly, SYNERACT could serve as an alternative to ISODATA for multispectral image analysis. A dense and reliable DSM (digital surface model) is first generated and used to split the scene in two kinds of areas of interest - ground and buildings. The surfaces within these areas are modeled under TIN (triangular irregular network) form by a constrained Delaunay triangulation of a selection of 3D points and line segments provided by reliable true multi-image feature extractions. The DSM are reliable, accurate, and correctly reproduce landscape morphology (discontinuities, steep slopes, slope breaks, microstructures, etc.). Il est considéré comme suffisamment important pour que trois approches, correspondant à trois configurations opérationnelles différentes, aient été développées : une approche grammaticale partant d'un seul couple stéréoscopique, une approche par extraction de primitive 3D multistéréoscopique en utilisant la redondance des points de vues multiples et une approche par calcul de surface polyédrique optimale utilisant un couple stéréoscopique et une base de donnée cadastrale. Cet article présente ces trois approches de manière indépendante et évoque les possibilités futures de fusion de ces approches. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the feasibility of spectral mixture analysis (SMA) in deriving comparable physical measures of urban land cover that describe the morphological characteristics of cities. SMA offers a way of analyzing satellite imagery of urban areas that may be superior to more standard methods of classification. Mixing models are based on the assumption that the remotely measured spectrum of a given pixel can be modeled as a combination of pure spectra, called endmembers. SMA, using four image endmembers (vegetation, impervious surface, soil, and shade), was applied to an IRS-1C multispectral image in order to extract measures that describe the anatomy of the Greater Cairo region, Egypt, in terms of endmember fractions. The resulting fractions were then used to classify the urban scene into eight classes of natural and human-built features through a decision tree (DT) classifier. The accuracy of the DT classification was compared to the accuracies of two per-pixel supervised classifications of the IRS-1C image employing maximum likelihood (ML) and minimum distance-to-means (MDM) classifiers. Overall KAPPA accuracies were 0. 88 for the DT classification based on SMA fractions, and 0.60 and 0.45 for the classifications conducted through ML and MDM respectively.
