[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In the present work multi-spatial, spectral and temporal images taken from space platform were acquired to analyze Talakadu (an archaeological site in Karnataka, India) area and identify linear features and geometrical shapes on the surface that are not natural but can be human artefacts from the past and therefore might indicate potential loca-tions for archaeological exploration. Before such remote sensing data can be used they have to be processed and prepared for facilitating meaningful interpretation. The scope and importance of image processing and enhancements depend on the sur-face conditions of study area. The peculiar geo-graphical configuration of the Talakadu area has made the greater part of an old township complete-ly buried under wind blown sand from the river Kaveri that skirts the west of Talakadu. Towards carrying out analysis in spatial, spectral and tem-poral domains, space imagery from Landsat Thematic Mapper, Multispectral images from LISS-IV sensor of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) series and high resolution images from IRS CAR-TOSAT series were used. Several image-processing algorithms were employed to evaluate their effica-cy to identify linear features and geometrical shapes that might indicate presence of buried remains. These include enhancements and improve-ments in data quality, Pan sharpening, Principal Component Analysis for enhancement and change detection studies. These analyses were conducted after subjecting all the imagery to a common refer-ence frame through automated registration using non-linear methods with sub-pixel accuracy. This work presents the details of the various image pro-cessing techniques used to investigate their effica-cy in the context of identifying the different archae-ological details both known ones and possibly new potential locations. Our preliminary analysis indi-cates at least four likely locations for further archaeological exploration, thus suggesting a new approach in the light of the methodology available. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) We analysed the sensitivity of a decision tree derived forest type mapping to simulated data errors in input digital elevation model (DEM), geology and remotely sensed (Landsat Thematic Mapper) variables. We used a stochastic Monte Carlo simulation model coupled with a one-at-a-time approach. The DEM error was assumed to be spatially autocorrelated with its magnitude being a percentage of the elevation value. The error of categorical geology data was assumed to be positional and limited to boundary areas. The Landsat data error was assumed to be spatially random following a Gaussian distribution. Each layer was perturbed using its error model with increasing levels of error, and the effect on the forest type mapping was assessed. The results of the three sensitivity analyses were markedly different, with the classification being most sensitive to the DEM error, than to the Landsat data errors, but with only a limited sensitivity to the geology data error used. A linear increase in error resulted in non-linear increases in effect for the DEM and Landsat errors, while it was linear for geology. As an example, a DEM error of as small as +2% reduced the overall test accuracy by more than 2%. More importantly, the same uncertainty level has caused nearly 10% of the study area to change its initial class assignment at each perturbation, on average. A spatial assessment of the sensitivities indicates that most of the pixel changes occurred within those forest classes expected to be more sensitive to data error. In addition to characterising the effect of errors on forest type mapping using decision trees, this study has demonstrated the generality of employing Monte Carlo analysis for the sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of categorical outputs that have distinctive characteristics from that of numerical outputs. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) Cet article présente une nouvelle approche à l'extraction de bâtiments pour la détection et l'extraction de contours à deux dimensions (2-D) des toits de bâtiments à partir de l'imagerie (pan-sharpened) couleur IKONOS en utilisant des algorithmes améliorés d'intégration spectrale et spatiale. En se basant sur l'algorithme d'extraction et de classification des objets homogènes (ECHO) et sur l'algorithme d'extraction et de classification non supervisées des objets homogènes (UnECHO), trois nouveaux algorithmes pour l'extraction des bâtiments sont proposés. Il s'agit de la segmentation supervisée à multisommets (SSMS), l'analyse du voisinage couvert (AVC) et la détection de la structure transvoisinage (DSTV). Les étapes fondamentales de l'approche proposée sont les suivantes : (1) la segmentation spectrale par la SSMS, (2) l'intégration de l'information spectrale et spatiale par l'AVC et la DSTV et (3) la délimitation du contour des toits des bâtiments. La performance de l'approche proposée est évaluée en réalisant des essais des différentes scènes des images IKONOS et en la comparant avec d'autres algorithmes. [Termes IGN] surveillanceRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing plays a key role in landscape monitoring, but our handling of these data in a multi-temporal time series is not yet fully developed. Of particular concern is the presence of spatial and thematic errors in independently created maps that distort measures of landscape pattern and constrain the reliability of change analysis. In addition, there is a need to incorporate continuous attributes of cover gradients for flexible map representations that support a variety of applications. In this paper, we present a framework for generating temporally and categorically dynamic land-cover maps that provide such a reliable and adaptable foundation. The centerpiece is a spatio-temporal disturbance-inventory database, created through semi-automated change detection and conditioned with boundary-matching procedures, which can be used to backdate and update both continuous and categorical reference maps. We demonstrate our approach using multi-annual Landsat imagery from a forested region in west-central Alberta, Canada, between the years 1998 and 2005. This article addresses the issue of modelling mudslide-susceptible locations using an information value approach. Landsat 7 (ETM+) was employed to create a land-use map with limited field checks. Other parameters considered were lineament, road, soil, stream network and lithology. Topographic parameters such as slope and aspect play a dominant role in slope stability studies. Maps for slope and aspects were developed from a digital elevation model using statistical surface interpolation techniques. This article offers insight into the importance of the selection of suitable surface interpolation techniques. The three surface interpolation techniques evaluated in the study were: inverse distance weighted, Kriging and Spline. These were found to have varied accuracies of interpolation surfaces for all parameters, including elevation, slope and aspect. Surfaces offering the best accuracy were adopted for the information value approach for mudslide susceptibility zonation.
