[Termes IGN] système d'information foncièreRésumé : (Auteur) The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite provides retrievals of soil moisture in roughly the upper 5 cm with a 30-50-km resolution and a mission accuracy requirement of 0.04 cm3/cm-3. These observations can be used to improve land surface model (LSM) soil moisture states through data assimilation (DA). In this paper, SMOS soil moisture retrievals are assimilated into the Noah LSM via an Ensemble Kalman Filter within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Land Information System. Bias correction is implemented using cumulative distribution function (cdf) matching, with points aggregated by either land cover or soil type to reduce the sampling error in generating the cdfs. An experiment was run for the warm season of 2011 to test SMOS DA and to compare assimilation methods. Verification of soil moisture analyses in the 0-10-cm upper layer and the 0-1-m root zone was conducted using in situ measurements from several observing networks in central and southeastern United States. This experiment showed that SMOS DA significantly increased the anomaly correlation of Noah soil moisture with station measurements from 0.45 to 0.57 in the 0-10-cm layer. Time series at specific stations demonstrates the ability of SMOS DA to increase the dynamic range of soil moisture in a manner consistent with station measurements. Among the bias correction methods, the correction based on soil type performed best at bias reduction but also reduced correlations. The vegetation-based correction did not produce any significant differences compared with using a simple uniform correction curve. Watering of the tree has limited influence in time on the RCS, i.e., limited to around 30 min, but impacts the coherence over a longer period of time. Analysis of the series shows that according to the season considered, clear daily cycles from 1 to 2 dB may appear on the coherence only (autumn) or on both coherence and RCS (spring), whereas in winter, they are absent on both results. It was analyzed in the literature that the variations in RCS are strongly correlated to the variations in the dielectric constant in trunks and branches. In addition, it was shown that the HV RCS presents seasonal trends with a yearly cycle of roughly 3 dB following similar trends reported for trunk moisture content time series. [Termes IGN] TromsRésumé : (auteur) Avalanches are a natural hazard that occur in mountainous regions of Troms County in northern Norway during winter and can cause loss of human life and damage to infrastructure. Knowledge of when and where they occur especially in remote, high mountain areas is often lacking due to difficult access. However, complete, spatiotemporal avalanche activity data sets are important for accurate avalanche forecasting, as well as for deeper understanding of the link between avalanche occurrences and the triggering snowpack and meteorological factors. It is therefore desirable to develop a technique that enables active mapping and monitoring of avalanches over an entire winter. Avalanche debris can be observed remotely over large spatial areas, under all weather and light conditions by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. The recently launched Sentinel-1A satellite acquires SAR images covering the entire Troms County with frequent updates. By focusing on a case study from New Year 2015 we use Sentinel-1A images to develop an automated avalanche debris detection algorithm that utilizes change detection and unsupervised object classification methods. We compare our results with manually identified avalanche debris and field-based images to quantify the algorithm accuracy. Our results indicate that a correct detection rate of over 60% can be achieved, which is sensitive to several algorithm parameters that may need revising. With further development and refinement of the algorithm, we believe that this method could play an effective role in future operational monitoring of avalanches within Troms and has potential application in avalanche forecasting areas worldwide. [Termes IGN] volume (grandeur)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the problem of debris estimation which is one of the most important initial challenges in the wake of a disaster like the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Reasonable estimates of the debris have to be made available to decision makers as quickly as possible. Current approaches to obtain this information are far from being optimal as they usually rely on manual interpretation of optical imagery. We have developed a novel approach for the estimation of tsunami debris pile heights and volumes for improved emergency response. The method is based on a stereo-synthetic aperture radar (stereo-SAR) approach for very high-resolution polarimetric SAR. An advanced gradient-based optical-flow estimation technique is applied for optimal image coregistration of the low-coherence non-interferometric data resulting from the illumination from opposite directions and in different polarizations. By applying model based decomposition of the coherency matrix, only the odd bounce scattering contributions are used to optimize echo time computation. The method exclusively considers the relative height differences from the top of the piles to their base to achieve a very fine resolution in height estimation. To define the base, a reference point on non-debris-covered ground surface is located adjacent to the debris pile targets by exploiting the polarimetric scattering information. The proposed technique is validated using in situ data of real tsunami debris taken on a temporary debris management site in the tsunami affected area near Sendai city, Japan. The estimated height error is smaller than 0.6 m RMSE. The good quality of derived pile heights allows for a voxel-based estimation of debris volumes with a RMSE of 1099 m3. Advantages of the proposed method are fast computation time, and robust height and volume estimation of debris piles without the need for pre-event data or auxiliary information like DEM, topographic maps or GCPs. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) The active contour model (ACM) is widely used in target detection of optical and medical images, but multiplicative speckle noise largely interferes with its use in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. To overcome this difficulty, a region- and edge-based convex ACM with high efficiency is proposed for target detection in small-scale SAR images. Then, a novel detection algorithm, which combines the advantages of a multiscale saliency detection method and the proposed high-efficiency ACM, is presented to address a large-scale and high-resolution SAR image automatically. Target detection experiments in real and simulated SAR images show that the proposed methods outperform classical ACMs and the popular two-parameter constant false alarm rate detector in terms of efficiency and accuracy.
