[Termes IGN] polarimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are affected by speckle noise, originated by the SAR system's coherent nature. The problem of speckle noise in one-dimensional (1-D) data is already solved, as speckle has a multiplicative characteristic. SAR polarimetry represents an extension to multidimensional data by the use of polarization wave diversity. As a consequence of the existence of a correlation degree between the SAR images, the 1-D speckle noise model cannot be extended to multidimensional SAR data. This paper is devoted to present a completely new speckle noise model for the complex covariance matrix describing polarimetric SAR data in the distributed scatterers case. As will be shown, this new model is able to identify which are the noise mechanisms in all the covariance matrix elements. The speckle noise model is validated by using real L-band polarimetric data acquired with the German E-SAR sensor. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric (D-InSAR) data of ground surface deformation are affected by several error sources associated with image acquisitions and data processing. In this paper, we study the use of D-InSAR for quantifying land subsidence due to groundwater extraction. We model the data as the sum of a trend, a zeromean stochastic process and white noise. A geostatistical approach combines D-InSAR subsidence data with in situ levelling measurements. The objective of this paper is to correct the errors contained in the D-InSAR measurements by using measurements as the ground data to improve their accuracy. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and original D-InSAR measurements are analysed at levelling points using variograms and predicted at unvisited points using kriging. The integrated measurements are obtained by subtracting the predicted errors from the original D-InSAR measurements. The proposed method is applied to data collected in the Tianjin (China) area where land subsidence occurs due to groundwater extraction. Results demonstrate the capability of the D-InSAR technique for detecting subsidence at the centimetre level, and of using a limited number of levelling points to improve the accuracy of D-InSAR deformation measurements provided the coherence of images used is high enough. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and D-InSAR measurements are quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE). RMSE for the original data was equal to 2.8, and 0.8 for the integrated data, whereas the mean error was equal to 2.1 and 0.0, respectively. [Termes IGN] Pays de GallesRésumé : (Auteur) Phase coherence between pairs of ERS SAR images is investigated as a method for mapping urban extent in South Wales, United Kingdom. Separability indices show that image pairs with time delays of greater than 2 months and baseline separations of less than 300 m can discriminate effectively between urban and non-urban land. Classification kappa coefficients greater than 90 percent are achieved, and there is evidence to suggest that a single coherence threshold is applicable for mapping urban extent in any similar landscape. [Termes IGN] ItalieRésumé : (Auteur) The capability of measuring small crustal deformation by means of differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry (DIFSAR) is investigated in this work. After outlining the mathematical background inherent to the principles of differential SAR interferometry and showing the potential and limits of theinformation content of spaceborne DIFSAR data, the analysis of the impact of this technique is carried out on some interferometric couples gathered in 1996 by the ERS-1/ERS-2 (European Remote Sensing Satellite) tandem mission. The imaged scene is a portion of the Sannio-Matese mountainous area (Southern Italy). Suitable interferometric couples are processed and analyzed in order to show potentialities of detecting surface deformation by means of DIFSAR data, and derive qualitative information on the relationship between DIFSAR-based change detection and the time scale of crustal dynamics, by investigating the effectiveness of the technique as function of the scene coherence. Preliminary result confirm the feasability of the technique, even the cost of sophisticated processing and careful error analysis.
