[Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) Wood density is a characteristic of major interest. Usually, it is used as an indicator of wood quality; however, in the context of global change, it is increasingly used for biomass and carbon storage estimations. X-ray computer tomography is a method which enables quick estimates of wood density after applying a calibration procedure.
A review of the literature is presented in this article. Most of the previous studies have been performed in the 80’s or at the beginning of the 90’s. In this study, the relationship between wood density and Hounsfield numbers was investigated using a recent medical scanner. A linear relationship was fitted using a calibration data set which consisted in tropical wood samples representing a large range of densities ranging between 133 and 1319 kg m−3, and then validated using an independent data set (mainly temperate tree species). The fitted relationships were very strong (R2 > 0.999), whichever the tested scanner settings, with slight but significant effects of the current voltage and reconstruction filters. The RMSE values computed from the validation data set ranged between 5.4 and 7.7 kg m−3 for densities ranging between 364 and 821 kg m−3. In conclusion, this method of calibration enables the use of a medical scanner to obtain maps of wood density, in a fast and non destructive way, and with a very good accuracy. Very interesting perspectives are opened regarding biomass distribution within trees.

The development of alder carr was reconstructed at five sites in the Czech Republic, using historical aerial photographs and methods of dendrochronology. The aims were to investigate the succession from wet grasslands to alder carr at sites previously intensively managed for agriculture and to find out the role of fluctuations in the groundwater table, caused by artificial drainage channels, in the observed stand dynamics and tree growth. The spread of forest (i.e., an increase in forest cover) predominated until the 1970s at all sites. This trend was disrupted by a large-scale dieback of forest stands in four of the five sites after the 1970s, followed by an increase in patch heterogeneity, as indicated by landscape metrics. The radial growth increment in Alnus glutinosa has been affected predominately by local environmental factors, probably including the changing degree of waterlogging. Forest dieback was presumably connected with a lesser extent of drainage channels. Our results indicate that observed successional pathways at sites of alder carr were probably caused by local changes in the groundwater table.

[Termes IGN] Quercus sessilifloraRésumé : (auteur) In this study, leaf morphology was assessed in a mixed oak stand (western France) using two geometric morphometric (landmark and outline) datasets and one dataset of 19 leaf measures. Adult oaks (817 oaks), comprising four white oak species ( Quercus petraea , Q. robur , Q. pubescens and Q. pyrenaica ), were sampled for DNA extraction and genetic analysis (nuclear microsatellites). Leaf morphology was assessed on 336 oaks, comprising pure species and hybrids as determined by genetic assignment. This comparative study of oak leaf morphology, based on the use of two free size geometric morphometric methods and a set of leaf measurements, combined with the genetic assignment of individuals to pure species or hybrids, provided information about the differences among species and the intermediate leaf morphology of their hybrids.
