[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The long-term resilience of Pyrenean forests in the face of historical anthropogenic clearing remains largely unknown. In this paper, a high-resolution (decadal to subdecadal) paleoecological study of mid-elevation Pyrenean forests is presented that encompasses the last two millennia. This long-term record was obtained after sediment coring, dating (varve counting) and pollen analysis of annually laminated (varved) sediments from Lake Montcortès, situated at 1027 m elevation, in the transition between the Mediterranean and montane forest belts. This allowed the definition of three major deforestation/recovery cycles during the Roman, Medieval and Modern times. Each DR cycle is characterized considering three different levels: overall forest trends, forest type and individual taxa. Overall, the studied forests exhibited high resilience, as they recovered almost completely after each deforestation event (bulk resilience). The critical point of no return (tipping point) beyond which forests would have irreversibly disappeared from the region was never reached, even after deforestation magnitudes above 60%. The different forest types identified (conifer, sclerophyll and deciduous) persisted over time, showing similar heterogeneous patterns with minor spatial reorganizations (mosaic resilience). Individually, the main forest taxa underwent minor variations in their relative abundances, always within the same attraction domains (community resilience). The high levels of resilience documented in these Pyrenean forests are attributed to the action of metapopulation and metacommunity processes and mechanisms in a highly dynamic patchy environment. Conservation actions should be focused on the maintenance of these spatial patterns and the associated ecological dynamics. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de nomsRésumé : (Auteur) When extracting structured data from repetitively organized documents, such as dictionaries, directories, or even newspapers, a key challenge is to correctly segment what constitutes the basic text regions for the target database. Traditionally, such a problem was tackled as part of the layout analysis and was mostly based on visual clues for dividing (top-down) approaches. Some agglomerating (bottom-up) approaches started to consider textual information to link similar contents, but they required a proper over-segmentation of ne-grained units. In this work, we propose a new pragmatic approach whose eciency is demonstrated on 19 th century French Trade Directories. We propose to consider two sub-problems: coarse layout detection (text columns and reading order), which is assumed to be eective and not detailed here, and a ne-grained entry separation stage for which we propose to adapt a state-of-the-art Named Entity Recognition (NER) approach. By injecting special visual tokens, coding, for instance, indentation or breaks, into the token stream of the language model used for NER purpose, we can leverage both textual and visual knowledge simultaneously. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Topographic maps (1:40,000) used by the British Army on the Western Front in World War 1 had a five-part Grid Reference System consisting of: (1) Map Number; (2) Letter-Square – 24 letter squaresA to X on each map; (3) Number-Square – 36 (and sometimes 30) 1000-yard squares in each letter square; (4) Minor-Square – four 500-yard squares denoted a, b, c, d in each number square; (5) Small-Square – 10 × 10 = 100 small-squares in a minor-square. Letter and number grid Woesten references (e.g. X: 28.A.6.b.73) cannot be used by modern GPS navigation devices that require geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) or current map grid coordinates. This paper provides the background behind this project and demonstrates a method of transforming WW1 grid references to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates using Google Maps to obtain geographical coordinates, Geographic to UTM grid conversion and a 2D Conformal transformation. As well, it provides a ‘snapshot’ of practical methods that were used to develop a software package that would allow amateur military historians to convert the WW1 Grid Reference System to contemporary coordinates. Il en est de même pour la seconde carte, celle de l’état-major, qui a retenu l’attention de nombreux ingénieurs cartographes militaires et civils. La troisième, celle qui fut baptisée « Nouvelle carte de France », attire pour le moment beaucoup moins l’attention des chercheurs.
Elle a connu une histoire passionnante qui traverse tout le XXe siècle (lire ci-contre). La cartographie, c’est une mémoire à conserver : les techniques et les outils depuis la planchette jusqu’à la photogrammétrie avec l’arrivée du numérique ; les innombrables débats autour de l’échelle ; le rôle de la carte et des données cartographiques dans le développement de notre société – gratuité ou non ? Pour la Nouvelle carte de France, un sujet scientifique reste majeur : celui de la représentation du relief et de l’altimétrie (lire page 44). La cartographie, c’est aussi un patrimoine à protéger. La connaissance des métiers et des hommes qui ont fait cette carte est à ce titre précieuse. [Termes IGN] société savanteRésumé : (auteur) This article examines a cartographic encounter that took place in 1850 between Kallihirua, a member of Inughuit community of Northern Greenland, and members of the British Admiralty. Drawing on recent literatures that critically assess histories of indigenous mapping, the article explores the troubling circumstances that surrounded this encounter and analyses two maps which were produced as a result. Informed by ongoing debates pertaining to the decolonization of geographical knowledge, the article also reflects critically upon the extent to which historical indigenous cosmologies were commensurate with non-indigenous cartographic traditions and thus reassesses the motivations that lay behind the production and circulation of these maps. The article thus concludes by arguing that while Kallihirua certainly did contribute various types of geographical knowledge during this encounter, to label him as the sole author of these maps would be a problematic act of "cartographic ventriloquism".
