[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Reconstructing past landscapes from historical maps requires quantifying the accuracy and completeness of these sources. The accuracy and completeness of two historical maps of the same period covering the same area in Israel were examined: the 1:63,360 British Palestine Exploration Fund map (1871–1877) and the 1:100,000 French Levés en Galilée (LG) map (1870). These maps cover the mountainous area of the Galilee (northern Israel), a region with significant natural and topographical diversity, and a long history of human presence. Land-cover features from both maps, as well as the contours drawn on the LG map, were digitized. The overall correspondence between land-cover features shown on both maps was 59% and we found that the geo-referencing method employed (transformation type and source of control points) did not significantly affect these correspondence measures. Both maps show that in the 1870s, 35% of the Galilee was covered by Mediterranean maquis, with less than 8% of the area used for permanent agricultural cropland (e.g., plantations). This article presents how the reliability of the maps was assessed by using two spatial historical sources, and how land-cover classes that were mapped with lower certainty and completeness are identified. Some of the causes that led to observed differences between the maps, including mapping scale, time of year, and the interests of the surveyors, are also identified. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Land cover change is one of the major contributors to global change, but long-term, broad-scale, detailed and spatially explicit assessments of land cover change are largely missing, although the availability of historical maps in digital formats is increasing. The problem often lies in efficiency of analyses of historical maps for large areas. Our goal was to assess different methods to reconstruct land cover and land use from historical maps to identify a time-efficient and reliable method for broad-scale land cover change analysis. We compared two independent forest cover reconstruction methods: first, regular point sampling, and second, wall-to-wall mapping, and tested both methods for the Polish Carpathians (20,000 km2) for the 1860s, 1930s and 1970s. We compared the two methods in terms of their reliability for forest change analysis, relative to sampling error, point location and landscape context including local forest cover, area of the spatial reference unit and forest edge-to-core ratio. Our results showed that the point-based analysis overestimated forest cover in comparison to wall-to-wall mapping by 1–3%, depending on the mapping period. The reasons for the differences were mainly the backdating approach and map generalisation rather than the point grid position or sampling error. When we compared forest cover trajectories over time, we found that the point-based reconstruction captured forest cover dynamics with a comparable accuracy to the wall-to-wall mapping. More broadly, our assessment showed that historical maps can provide valuable data on long-term land cover trends, and that point-based sampling can be an efficient and accurate way to assess forest area and change trends. We suggest that our point-based approach could allow land cover mapping across much of Europe starting in the 1800s. Our findings are important because they suggest that land cover change, a key component of global change, can be assessed over large areas much further back in time than it is commonly done. This would allow to truly understand path dependencies, land use legacies, and historical drivers of land cover change. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, forest research benefits from access to archived cartographic materials and geographic information systems technology, which both allow to analyze the processes of forest cover changes over time. Available digital elevation models (DEMs) and soil maps make it possible to consider terrain relief and soils characteristics in the research. The present paper analyzes changes of forest cover in the Holy Cross Mountains (central Poland) within the period of 1800–2011 and they relation to altitude and slope gradient classes as well as to genetic soil groups. The source materials consist of topographic maps created in 1800, 1900, 1930, 1983 and thematic maps: Polish Sozological Map in 1: 50,000 scale from 2011, Soil Map of Poland in 1: 300,000 scale and SRTM3 digital elevation model. Scanned maps were georeferenced to metric coordinate system and then forest areas were digitalized by on-screen vectorization. Digital elevation model was used to delineate elevation and slope gradient classes. Finally, the overlay geoprocessing methods were used to analyze the areas of forest cover changes in time, also in addition to altitude zones, slope gradient and genetic soil type classes. Forest cover indicator (%) and mean annual index of forest cover change (ha•year-1) have been calculated. Forest cover was the highest at the beginning of the study period in 1800 and the lowest in 1930. The decrease in forest cover in this period equaled 35.3 %. A slow process of recovery began in 1930 and continues till today. However, the coverage noted in 1800 has not yet been achieved. Also forest cover stability analysis has been performed. Today forest areas of very high stability cover about 21% of the Holy Cross Mountains and 49% of the area covered by trees in 1800. The present analysis has been performed with the use of GIS-supported comparative cartography and historical maps, which have significantly improved the investigations of long-term forest cover changes.
