[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The aim of the study is to present landscape changes in the nineteenth century in the central part of the Upper Silesian Industrial District, which is the municipality of Katowice (southern Poland). The comparison of changes, particularly components of the geographical environment, is based on two time periods – the year 1827 and 1883. Nineteenth-century maps were georeferenced, digitized and a series of thematic spatial visualizations presenting quantitative changes were generated by means of the Geographic Information System (GIS). The scale of the visualization created is 1:100,000 and the area is 16,400 ha. The spatial visualization of quantitative landscape change shows the development of the anthropogenic pressure in the form of settlement areas, raw materials extraction places, roads, and the decrease of natural environments, such as forests, rivers, and water bodies. These changes were caused mainly by the exploration of underground deposits and the rapidly growing population of Upper Silesia. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieMots-clés libres : FORWIND Résumé : (auteur) Strong winds may uproot and break trees and represent a major natural disturbance for European forests. Wind disturbances have intensified over the last decades globally and are expected to further rise in view of the effects of climate change. Despite the importance of such natural disturbances, there are currently no spatially explicit databases of wind-related impact at a pan-European scale. Here, we present a new database of wind disturbances in European forests (FORWIND). FORWIND is comprised of more than 80 000 spatially delineated areas in Europe that were disturbed by wind in the period 2000–2018 and describes them in a harmonized and consistent geographical vector format. The database includes all major windstorms that occurred over the observational period (e.g. Gudrun, Kyrill, Klaus, Xynthia and Vaia) and represents approximately 30 % of the reported damaging wind events in Europe. Correlation analyses between the areas in FORWIND and land cover changes retrieved from the Landsat-based Global Forest Change dataset and the MODIS Global Disturbance Index corroborate the robustness of FORWIND. Spearman rank coefficients range between 0.27 and 0.48 (p value Numéro de notice : A2020-874 Affiliation des auteurs : IGN+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.5194/essd-12-257-2020 Date de publication en ligne : 10/02/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-12-257-2020 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=99655

[Termes IGN] traitement du langage naturelRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we propose and discuss a methodology to map the spatial fingerprints of novels and authors based on all of the named urban roads (i.e., odonyms) extracted from novels. We present several ways to explore Parisian space and fictional landscapes by interactively and simultaneously browsing geographical space and literary text. Our project involves building a platform capable of retrieving, mapping and analyzing the occurrences of named urban roads in novels in which the action occurs wholly or partly in Paris. This platform will be used in several areas, such as cultural tourism, urban research, and literary analysis. The paper focuses on extracting named urban roads and mapping the results for a sample of 31 novels published between 1800 and 1914. Two approaches to the annotation of odonyms are compared. First, we describe a proof of concept using queries made via the TXM textual analysis platform. Then, we describe an automatic process using a natural language processing (NLP) method. Additionally, we mention how the geosemantic information annotated from the text (e.g., a structure combining verbs, spatial relations, named entities, adjectives and adverbs) can be used to automatically characterize the semantic content associated with named urban roads. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Images from archival aerial photogrammetric surveys are a unique and relatively unexplored means to chronicle 3D land-cover changes occurred since the mid20th century. They provide a relatively dense temporal sampling of the territories with very high spatial resolution. Thus, they offer time series data which can answer to a large variety of long-term environmental monitoring studies. Besides, they are generally stereoscopic surveys, making it possible to derive 3D information (Digital Surface Models). In recent years, they have often been digitized, making them more suitable to be considered in automatic analyses processes. For instance, IGN (the French national mapping agency) has digitized its archival aerial photogrammetric surveys: images can be downloaded from a web service (http://remonterletemps.ign.fr/) Thus, archival aerial photogrammetric surveys appear as being a powerful remote sensing data source to study land use/cover evolution over the last century. However, several difficulties have to be faced to be able to use them in automatic analysis processes. A first bottleneck for accurate comparison between epochs is their fine georeferencing. Such information has generally been lost and must be retrieved. No fully automatic method has been proposed yet and existing studies are rather limited in terms of area and number of dates. State-of-the-art shows that one major challenge is the identification of ground references: cartographic coordinates and their position in the archival images. This task is often manually performed, and extremely time-consuming. This contribution proposes to use a photogrammetric approach, and states that the 3D information that can be computed is the key to full automation. Its original idea lies in a the use of the coarse absolute image orientation from existing metadata to derive coarse Digital Surface Model (DSM) and orthoimage that are then used to improve absolute image orientation. It only relies on a recent orthoimage+DSM, used as master reference for all epochs. The coarse orthoimage, compared with such a reference, allows the identification of dense ground references and the coarse DSM provides their position in the archival images. A new iteration of the georeferencing process can then be done using these ground references. At the end, images orientation is retrieved and orthoimages as well as digital surface models can be computed for each epoch. Another issue is the radiometric equalization of images (to remove atmospheric as well as vignetting effects), in order to obtain a homogeneous mosaic suitable with automatic classification processes. Last but not least, surveys available on a study area can exhibit very different characteristics: survey pattern, focal, spatial resolution, modality (panchromatic, color, infrared...). Planimetric and altimetric accuracies of derived products depend on these characteristics. Thus, automatic change detection and analysis processes have to cope with these uncertainties.
