[Termes IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, airborne LiDAR sensors have shown remarkable performance in the mapping of forest vegetation. This experimental study looks at LiDAR data at the scale of individual pulses to elucidate the sources behind interpulse variation in backscattering. Close-range photogrammetry was used for obtaining the canopy reference measurements at the ratio scale. The experiments illustrated different orientation techniques in the field, LiDAR acquisitions and photogrammetry in both leaf-on and leaf-off conditions, and two-waveform recording LiDAR sensors. The intrafootprint branch silhouettes in zenith-looking images, in which the camera, footprint, and LiDAR sensor were collinear, were extracted and contrasted with LiDAR backscattering. An enhanced planimetric match (refinement of strip matching) was achieved by shifting the pulses in a strip and searching for the maximal correlation between the silhouette and LiDAR intensity. The relative silhouette explained up to 80–90% of the interpulse variation. We tested whether accounting for the Gaussian spread of intrafootprint irradiance would improve the correlations, but the effect was blurred by small-scale geometric noise. Accounting for receiver gain variations in the Leica ALS60 sensor data strengthened the dependences. The size of the vegetation objects required for triggering a LiDAR observation was analyzed. We demonstrated the use of LiDAR pulses adjacent to canopy vegetation, which did not trigger a canopy echo, for canopy mapping. Pulses not triggering an echo constitute the complement to the actual canopy. We conclude that field photogrammetry is a useful tool for mapping forest canopies from below and that quantitative analysis is feasible even at the scale of single pulses for enhanced understanding of LiDAR observations from vegetation. [Termes IGN] réfractionRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping the human plantar (sole) surface during movement using an optical imaging technique often necessitates the use of a stage made of transparent material so that the human subject's gait can be imaged in a natural way, without obstruction. This research investigates a technique to reduce glass refraction distortion in the captured 3D spatial data. Impurities in the glass produce outliers in the calculated distortion values which were detected using an automated slope gradient technique. A point-based moving averaging technique was utilised to determine the most appropriate distortion correction to replace the removed outliers. The results show that the empirical methods developed provide accurate glass refraction corrections for photogrammetric measurements, highlighted using the 3D foot plantar surface captured during various phases of a person's gait. [Termes IGN] volume (grandeur)Résumé : (Auteur) Different oil spill pollution types could be produced in oil transport and weathering processes. Investigation of these pollution types is beneficial for oil spill recovery and processing. Optical remote sensing techniques play an important role in marine oil spill monitoring and have the ability to identify different oil spill pollution types. Recently, research on oil spill optical remote sensing has made much progress in detecting targets, identifying spectral response characteristics, and formulating theories. Floating black oil, oil slicks, and oil-water mixture in marine oil spill accidents are the main targets to be investigated by optical remote sensors. The visible spectral response differences of these targets are the base of oil spill optical remote sensing research. Bi-directional reflectance distribution function, light interference, absorption, and scattering of targets produce different spectra. Therefore, oil spill optical remote sensing could be used to identify the main oil spill pollution types and estimate oil spill volume. In this paper, a sky status indicator (SSI) is proposed as a real-time recognition criterion for the detection, in particular, of the presence of rain events along the propagation path. The computation of the SSI is based on ground-based brightness temperature measurements, at 23.8 and 31.4 GHz, collected in Cabauw, Netherlands, in 2009 by the ESA Atmospheric Propagation and Profiling System (ATPROP) multichannel radiometer. A validation analysis is carried out between simulated data, which are computed by applying the radiative transfer equation to a database of radiosonde profiles collected in De Bilt, Netherlands, by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, and two data sets of radiometric observations at two elevation angles (è equal to 90° and è equal to 69.6°). The analysis based on SSI probability distribution functions has allowed for calculation of the boundary threshold values that are able to discriminate the status of the sky. Furthermore, performances of the SSI were validated against rainfall measurements collected at the ground by a rain gauge located near the ESA ATPROP multichannel radiometer. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we discuss the design concepts and preliminary results relating to the European Space Agency's ground-based campaign TropiScat, whose main goal is to evaluate temporal coherence at P-band in a tropical forest in quad-polarization, considering temporal lags ranging from hours to months and at different heights within the vegetation layer. The experiment has been successfully set up and operated since October 2011 at the Paracou field station, French Guiana, where the equipment was installed on top of the 55-m high Guyaflux Tower to illuminate the forest below. The system consists of a vector network analyzer connected to 20 antennas through a switchbox, which allows the use of any of them either as a transmitter or as a receiver. Vertical imaging and fully polarimetric capabilities are achieved by operating the 20 antennas in a multistatic fashion, resulting in an equivalent monostatic array consisting of 15 phase centers displaced along the vertical direction in each polarization. Such a design allows unambiguous imaging of the vegetation while yielding a minimum distance between nearby antennas on the order of 0.8 m, so as to minimize coupling effects. The equipment allows the gathering of signals with the tomographic array within a few minutes, resulting in the possibility to produce a tomographic image of the forest with a temporal sampling of 15 min. System calibration and validation was performed by employing a 2-m trihedral reflector and a rotating dihedral reflector. This allowed the evaluation of the system pulse response in all polarizations and also assessment of the extent of tower motions. As a result, tomographic images have been generated from 500 (P-band) to 900 MHz in all polarizations. Results from real data acquired in Fall 2011 confirm the feasibility of carrying out reliable coherence measurements for the whole duration of the campaign.
