[Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) The international scientific community has called for more detailed data on vegetation fires to improve the understanding of their role in global atmospheric chemistry, and on fire itself as an ecosystem disturbance. The fire science community highlighted the value of information such as fire spatial distribution, timing, extent, energy release, burning efficiency and emissions. In order to obtain reliable information on these parameters, a combination of operational and experimental spaceborne sensors with in situ and airborne sensor measurements is required. A small satellite demonstrator mission on Bispectral InfraRed Detection (BIRD) was prepared by the Institute of Space Sensor Technology and Planetary Exploration of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It was successfully launched on 22 October 2001 into a 570km sun-synchronous orbit. This paper presents new thermal mapping results obtained with the Advanced BIRD Airborne Simulator (ABAS) during a flight campaign over controlled forest fires in the open coal mining region of the Brandenburg country in Germany on 23 August 2001. These data have been successfully used to retrieve the effective area and effective temperature of forest fires by means of the application of the bispectral subpixel method. [Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) Differential GPS is able to provide cm-level positoning accuracies, as long as the carrier phase ambiguities are resolved to integer values. Classical methods are based on the use of a single reference station located in the vicinity of the rover. Due to the spatial decorrelation of the errors, the distance between the reference station and the user is generally limited to within 20-30 km or even less, mainly due to the ionosphere. The MultiRef method, developed at the University of Calgary, uses a network of reference stations to generate regional code and carrier phase corrections, which can be transmitted to users in order to increase the distance over which integer ambiguity resolution is possible. In the original method, the correlated errors, due to the satellite orbits, troposphere, and ionosphere are modeled together using the L1 and wide-lane observables. In this paper extensive efforts were carried out towards as optimizing the MultiRef method with the objective of maximizing its performance. Data collected in southeastern Brazil was used in this research. At first, the impact of using covariance function calculated with different data sets was assessed, showing improvement variations of up to 14% in the observation domain compared to using no network corrections, with the exact improvement depending on the data set used in the computation. A new approach, also using least-squares prediction (collation), was proposed to separately model the correlated errors. An additional effort was carried out in the terms of modeling the ionosphere into directional components. Results of the enhanced method showed the same level of improvement as those obtained using the original covariance functions. However, this new approach has advantages with respect to the transmission of the corrections. Finally, an additional step was taken in terms of applying a Kalman filter to the corrections in order to improve their quality. For cases when the corresponding satellite was setting at low elevations, the filter approach improved results up to 44%. A study on the impact of the various covariance functions on the estimated accuracy of the corrections is also included. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Field studies among diverse biomes demonstrate that massbased nitrogen concentration at leaf and canopy scales is strongly related to carbon uptake and cycling. Combined field and airborne imaging spectrometry studies demonstrate the capacity for accurate empirical estimation of forest canopy N concentration and other biochemical constituents at scales from forest stands to small landscapes. In this paper, we report on the utility of the first spacebased imaging spectrometer, Hyperion, for estimation of temperate forest canopy N concentration as compared to that achieved with the airborne highaltitude imaging spectrometer, the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). Overall accuracy of Hyperion estimates of forest canopy N concentration, as compared with field measurements, were within 0.25% dry mass, and AVIRISbased estimates were within 0.19% dry mass, each well within the accuracy required to distinguish among forested ecosystems in nitrogen status. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (Auteur) Here on Earth, high winds, heavy rains, deep snow, and other forms of severe weather can disrupt our daily lives. Conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, and the ionosphere can also affect our lives through the effects they have on satellites, communications, navigation, and power systems. Scientists are now studying space weather with a wide range of tools to try to learn more about the physical and chemical processes taking place in the upper atmosphere and beyond. One of these tools is GPS. The signals from the GPS satellites travel through the ionosphere on their way to receivers on or near Earth's surface. The free electrons populating this region of the atmosphere affect the propagation of the signals, changing their speed and direction of travel. By processing the data from a dual-frequency GPS receiver, it's actually possible to estimate just how many electrons were encountered by the signal along its travel path - the total electron content (TEC). TEC is the number of electrons in a column with a cross-sectional area of one square meter centered on the signal path. If a regional network of ground-based GPS receivers is used, then a map of TEC above the region can be constructed. The TEC normally varies smoothly from day to night as Earth's dayside atmosphere is ionized by the Sun's extreme ultraviolet radiation, while the nightside ionosphere electron content is reduced by chemical recombination. But the ionosphere can experience stormy weather just as the lower atmosphere does. Smooth variations in TEC are replaced by rapid fluctuations, and some regions experience significantly higher or lower TEC values than normal. In this month's column, we look at how GPS is being used to study such storms and how it is furthering our understanding of the Earth-Sun environment.
