[Termes IGN] sondeur acoustiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The precision of GPS/acoustic seafloor positioning was improved by introducing a hull-mounted onboard system in March 2008, which allows us to conduct acoustic ranging measurements with the vessel sailing along the pre-determined track lines, while the early system before 2008 could only adopt the uncontrollable drifting observation. The continuity of the positioning results due to the transition was first confirmed through the comparison between results from sailing and drifting observations conducted in parallel. Using the data acquired for about 3 years since 2008, the repeatability of the determined position for the sailing observation was evaluated to be about 2 cm in root mean squares in the horizontal component, significantly better than that for the early drifting observation. The improvement of positioning precision probably resulted from the improvement of geometric distribution of acoustic ranging data by controlling the track lines. It was also shown that the sailing observation allows to obtain reliable results with a smaller amount of data. Comparison between the results in different sea regions suggests that positioning precision is better in the region along the Nankai Trough than in the region along the Japan Trench, probably because of the complicated acoustic velocity structure of seawater often observed in the latter. Furthermore, the precision of height determination was also improved, which leads us to expect that vertical crustal movement will be detectable in the future through accumulation of data as well as further technology development. [Termes IGN] relief sous-marinRésumé : (Auteur) The local and regional distribution of seabed terrain types depends on factors such as slope and terrain ruggedness. Digital bathymetrical models (DBM) are therefore essential for mapping and predictive modeling of marine habitats. DBMs vary considerably with respect to scale and quality, and this variation is likely to influence the predictive ability of marine habitat models built with use of DBM-derived environmental predictor variables. We studied the interpretability of seabed terrain types from four different DBMs in two ways: by visual inspection of hillshade representation of the DBMs and by subjecting sets of variables derived from each of the four DBMs to maximum entropy (MaxEnt) predictive modeling of six seabed terrain types. Our results show that DBMs based on multibeam echo sounder data, resampled at resolutions up to 50 m, enable identification of concentrations of seabed terrain types characterized by moraine-ridge assemblies and plough-mark fields. Variables derived from models interpolated from contours of existing marine maps and bathymetric databases have strong limitations and merely enable separation of terrain dominated by rugged bedrock seabed from soft sediment flats. Interpolated DBMs are currently the only type of bathymetrical data that cover all Norwegian coastal waters. Their poor quality is an important obstacle to predictive modeling and classification of seabed habitats. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) Computations of Fourier coefficients and related integrals of the associated Legendre functions with a new method along with their application to spherical harmonics analysis and synthesis are presented. The method incorporates a stable three-step recursion equation that can be processed separately for each colatitudinal Fourier wavenumber. Recursion equations for the zonal and sectorial modes are derived in explicit single-term formulas to provide accurate initial condition. Stable computations of the Fourier coefficients as well as the integrals needed for the projection of Legendre functions are demonstrated for the ultra-high degree of 10,800 corresponding to the resolution of one arcmin. Fourier coefficients, computed in double precision, are found to be accurate to 15 significant digits, indicating that the normalized error is close to the machine round-off error. The orthonormality, evaluated with Fourier coefficients and related integrals, is shown to be accurate to O(10-15) for degrees and orders up to 10,800. The Legendre function of degree 10,800 and order 5,000, synthesized from Fourier coefficients, is accurate to the machine round-off error. Further extension of the method to even higher degrees seems to be realizable without significant deterioration of accuracy. The Fourier series is applied to the projection of Legendre functions to the high-resolution global relief data of the National Geophysical Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the spherical harmonic degree variance (power spectrum) of global relief data is discussed.
