The inertial sensors are the starting point of the theoretical analysis. Detailed models of a pendulous accelerometer, a rate integrating gyro and a ringlasergyro are introduced and discussed as examples of the method of the mathematical modelling. The transformations between the reference frames, which have to be realized for the implementation of the model equation of inertial positioning, are discussed with regard to today's state-of-the-art sensor technology. To obtain an overview of the behaviour of the solutions of the differential equations simplified as result of the above-mentioned discussion, the stability of the linearized equations are analysed, using analytical as well as numerical methods. Nevertheless, in the case at hand of a time-variable system, only restricted statements based on the linearized equations are possible. Hence in the extensive simulations carried out the nonlinear model equations were used. In particular, the effect of different sensor parameters on position and orientation are simulated for trajectories of different dynamics. For adapting the course and the dynamics of the trajectories, observed data is used. Furthermore, the results obtained using a simple compensation algorithm are presented. Finally, the appendix contains a detailed representation of the nonlinear and linear system equations for different parametrisations of both the translation and the rotation. The basic concept of analysis is a rigorous physical description of the inertial sensors and the platform. The analysis results in error models of the "ESG"-gyros, of the platform "servo-loops" and the fluid-fitted pendulum accelerometers. The anomalous gravity field is modelled by a five state shaping-filter based on a 2nd order Gauss-Markov-Process for the disturbing potential. In comparison to the existing error model of the GEO-SPIN II a large cross-coupling term and a g-drift of the gyros are introduced. The platform "servo-loop" errors consider a mass unbalance of the inner element, friction of the bearings, and the damping of the servo-motors. The error model of the accelerometers is extended by a scalefactor-assymmetry, a cubic scalefactor-error, and a cross-coupling term. Also vibrational effects in the gyros and accelerometers are discussed. After introducing the main system errors, the navigational errors, and the GPS-biases a 31 states Kalman filter is derived. The simulation of the Kalman filter with GPS-updates (delta-ranges, single phase-differences, and phase-rates) results in real-time accuracies o/± 1 to 4 cm in position, ± 0.5 to 1.5 mm/s in velocity and ± 1 to 2-10'5 ra/s2 (1 to 2 mgal) in gravity vector estimation for the integrated GPS/GEO-SPINII system. It is further shown in comparison, that the short-term accuracy of a modern Laser-INS is by factor two worse. In an integrated GPS/GEO-SPIN II system "cycle-slips" can be detected and removed. After a "loss of lock" of up to 35 sec a degradation of accuracy up to 10 cm (halve wavelength) in position may result, which, however, is decreasing again after GPS reception. In the thesis, the investigations on the accelerometers, the platform servo-loops, the anomalous gravity field filter modelling, and on the integration of GPS and INS have general character and, thus, are independent of the inertial system mentioned above. This instrument is being developed for a future orbital mission to make precise global gravity measurements. The scientific justification and requirements for such a mission are discussed. This includes geophysics, the primary mission objective, as well as secondary objectives, such as navigation and tests of fundamental laws of physics, i.e., a null test of the inverse square law of gravitation and tests of general relativity. The instrument design and status along with mission analysis, engineering assessments, and preliminary spacecraft concepts are discussed. In addition, critical spacecraft systems and required technology advancements are examined.
