[Termes IGN] IndonésieRésumé : (auteur) Seagrass percent cover is a crucial and influential component of the biophysical characteristics of seagrass beds and is a key parameter for monitoring seagrass conditions. Therefore, the availability of seagrass percent cover maps greatly assists in sustainable coastal ecosystem management. This research aimed to assess the consistency of PlanetScope imagery for seagrass percent cover mapping using two study areas, namely Parang Island and Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Assessing the consistency of the PlanetScope imagery performance in seagrass percent cover mapping helps understand the effects of variations in the image quality on its performance in monitoring changes in seagrass cover. Percent cover maps were derived using object-based image analysis (image segmentation and random forest) and pixel-based random forest algorithm. Accuracy assessment and consistency analysis were conducted on the basis of the following three approaches: overall accuracy consistency, agreement percentage and consistent pixel locations. Results show that PlanetScope images can fairly consistently map seagrass percent cover for a specific area across different dates. However, these images produced different levels of accuracy when used for mapping in seagrass meadows with various characteristics and benthic cover complexities. The mapping accuracy (OA–overall accuracy) and consistency (AP–agreement percentage) in patchy seagrass meadows (Parang Island, mean OA 18.4%–38.6%, AP 44.1%–70.3%) are different from those in continuous seagrass meadows (Labuan Bajo, OA 43.0%–56.2%, and AP 41.8%–55.8%). Moreover, PlanetScope images are consistent when used for mapping seagrasses with low and high percent covers but strive to obtain good consistency for medium percent cover due to the combination of seagrass and non-seagrass in a pixel. Furthermore, images with relatively similar image acquisition conditions (i.e., winds, aerosol optical depth, signal-to-noise ratio, and sunglint intensity) produce better consistency. The OA is related to the image acquisition conditions, whilst the AP is related to variation in these conditions. Nevertheless, PlanetScope is still the best high spatial resolution image that provides daily acquisition and is highly beneficial for various applications in tropical areas with persistent cloud coverage. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of forest biomass is an essential parameter for managing the forest in a sustainable way, as forest biomass data availability and reliability are necessary for forestry and forest planning, but also for the carbon market as well as to support the local economy in the mountain and inner areas. However, the accurate quantification of the above-ground biomass (AGB) is still a challenge both at the local and global levels. The use of remote sensing techniques with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms can be an excellent trade-off between resolution, scale, and frequency data of AGB estimation. In this study, we evaluated the combined use of RGB images from UAV, LiDAR data and ground truth data to estimate AGB in a forested watershed in Southern Italy. A low-cost AGB estimation method was adopted using a commercial fixed-wing drone equipped with an RGB camera, combined with the canopy information derived by LiDAR and validated by field data. Two modelling methods (stepwise regression, SR and random forest, RF) were used to estimate forest AGB. The output was an accurate maps of AGB for each model. The RF model showed better accuracy than the Steplm model, and the R2 increased from 0.81 to 0.86, and the RMSE and MAE values were decreased from 45.5 to 31.7 Mg ha-1 and from 34.2 to 22.1 Mg ha-1 respectively. We demonstrated that by increasing the computing efficiency through a machine learning algorithm, readily available images can be used to obtain satisfactory results, as proven by the accuracy of the Random forest above biomass estimation model. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAV) with RGB-cameras are affordable and versatile devices for the generation of a series of remote sensing products that can be used for forest inventory tasks, such as creating high-resolution orthomosaics and canopy height models. The latter may serve purposes including tree species identification, forest damage assessments, canopy height or timber stock assessments. Besides flight and image acquisition parameters such as image overlap, flight height, and weather conditions, the focal length, which determines the opening angle of the camera lens, is a parameter that influences the reconstruction quality. Despite its importance, the effect of focal length on the quality of 3D reconstructions of forests has received little attention in the literature. Shorter focal lengths result in more accurate distance estimates in the nadir direction since small angular errors lead to large positional errors in narrow opening angles. In this study, 3D reconstructions of four UAV-acquisitions with different focal lengths (21, 35, 50, and 85 mm) on a 1 ha mature mixed forest plot were compared to reference point clouds derived from high quality Terrestrial Laser Scans. Shorter focal lengths (21 and 35 mm) led to a higher agreement with the TLS scans and thus better reconstruction quality, while at 50 mm, quality losses were observed, and at 85 mm, the quality was considerably worse. F1-scores calculated from a voxel representation of the point clouds amounted to 0.254 with 35 mm and 0.201 with 85 mm. The precision with 21 mm focal length was 0.466 and 0.302 with 85 mm. We thus recommend a focal length no longer than 35 mm during UAV Structure from Motion (SfM) data acquisition for forest management practices. However, the fusion of these multisource data is still challenging, in which registration is one of the most important stages. In this paper, we propose a method of coarse point cloud registration which consists of two steps. The first step is to extract urban building facades in both an oblique photogrammetric point cloud and a lidar point cloud. The second step is to align the two point clouds using the extracted building facades. Object Vicinity Distribution Feature (Dijkman and Van Den Heuvel 2002) is introduced to describe the distribution of building facades and register the two heterologous point clouds. This method provides a good initial state for later refined registration process and is translation, rotation, and scale invariant. Experiment results show that the accuracy of this proposed automatic registration method is equiva- lent to the accuracy of manual registration with control points. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Given the initial calibration of multiple sensors, the fine registration between Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) point clouds and panoramic images is still challenging due to the unforeseen movement and temporal misalignment while collecting. To tackle this issue, we proposed a novel automatic method to register the panoramic images and MLS point clouds based on the matching of pole objects. Firstly, 2D pole instances in the panoramic images are extracted by a semantic segmentation network and then optimized. Secondly, every corresponding frustum point cloud of each pole instance is obtained by a shape-adaptive buffer region in the panoramic image, and the 3D pole object is extracted via a combination of slicing, clustering, and connected domain analysis, then all 3D pole objects are fused. Finally, 2D and 3D pole objects are re-projected onto virtual images respectively, and then fine 2D-3D correspondences are collected through maximizing pole overlapping area by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The accurate extrinsic orientation parameters are acquired by the Efficient Perspective-N-Point (EPnP). The experiments indicate that the proposed method performs effectively on two challenging urban scenes with an average registration error of 2.01 pixels (with RMSE 0.88) and 2.35 pixels (with RMSE 1.03), respectively.
