[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of the present paper is to develop a new method for delineating lakes and enclosed islands from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). The Thousand-Island Lake in China is chosen as the study site. DEM may have missing values or be inaccurate over water bodies. Thus, it is not trivial to delineate the shorelines of lake directly from DEM. We achieve this objective by overlaying the boundary derived from the Landsat image of the same area. Unlike traditional water body delineation techniques, e.g. the band ratio method, which make use of physical quantities, we only use the colour information from Landsat ETM+ band 7, 4 and 2. The main reason is that the colour information is the only resource available for most publicly available satellite data such as the maps from Google Earth. Thus, it is necessary to develop a method depending on only colour information. In the Landsat image, a discrimination function to determine whether a pixel belongs to the lake area is obtained by studying sample pixels chosen from the lake area. The delineation of shorelines is an evolutionary process. The evolution equation is derived according to the active contour model and the discrimination function. The initial contour is inside the lake and expands according to the evolution equation. The evolving curve converges to the boundaries of the lake efficiently with a satisfactory result. Finally, the shorelines are overlaid on the DEM according to latitude and longitude. Our geodesic active contour method is a general one, and could be used to delineate objects of interest such as oil slicks and burn scars in satellite images. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) In a landscape bridges are ambiguous features in that they are extensions of the bare earth but they are also man made. Therefore, in a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) generation, depending on application it is necessary to keep or remove bridges. For this reason they have to be detected explicitly. A geometric bridge detection algorithm is proposed that is based on the idea that features can be detected in a landscape based on cross-sections (profiles) in a landscape. The topological information contained in the cross-sections are used to identify seed bridge points. The seed bridge points are then used to detect individual bridges. The bridge detection algorithm is novel in that the algorithm is blind to the shape of a bridge and is adaptable to different bridge designs. Therefore, bridges need not have parallel edges or uniform width. Furthermore, bridges can curve, split into parts, and contain holes. The bridge detection algorithm has been tested on various data sets and found to work very well in detecting bridges. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an absolute position estimation method using an Indian remote sensing (IRS) satellite images, which is a part of a position estimation system. The accumulated buffer (AB) matching method is proposed, in which a set of accumulator cells is employed for a fast edge-based matching between IRS satellite images and aerial images. The proposed algorithm is based on the accumulated buffer, which is a set of accumulator cells employed in the Hough transform widely used for robust detection of lines or curves. Thanks to the inherent robustness of the proposed algorithm, accurate registration can be accomplished between totally different image modalities. By computer simulations with two sets of real aerial image sequences, the performance of the AB matching method is analyzed and its effectiveness is shown in terms of the position error in the hybrid position estimation system. We found that the proposed AB matching method significantly reduces the average position error produced by the relative position estimation in the hybrid position estimation system. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) An approach and strategy for automatic detection of buildings from aerial images using combined image analysis and interpretation techniques is described in this paper. It is undertaken in several steps. A dense DSM is obtained by stereo image matching and then the results of multi-band classification, the DSM, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi) are used to reveal preliminary building interest areas. From these areas, a shape modeling algorithm has been used to precisely delineate their boundaries. The Dempster-Shafer data fusion technique is then applied to detect buildings from the combination of three data sources by a statistically-based classification. A number of test areas, which include buildings of different sizes, shape, and roof color have been investigated. The tests are encouraging and demonstrate that all processes in this system are important for effective building detection. [Termes IGN] sédimentRésumé : (Auteur) We compared manual delineations with those derived from ten automated delineations of 420 watersheds in four physiographic provinces of the Chesapeake Basin. Automated methods included commercial DEM-based routines and different parameterizations of four enhanced methods: stream burning, normalized excavation, surface reconditioning, and normalized reconditioning. Un-enhanced methods resulted in individual watershed boundaries with some gross discrepancies in watershed size relative to manual delineations (error rate of 0.22 > 25 percent difference compared to manual) and significantly different watershed size distributions (Mann-Whitney U p = 0.012). Integrating mapped streams through enhanced methods substantially improved correspondence with manual watersheds (error rates of only 0.08-0.02 > 25 percent difference). Analysis of cropland area among methods showed a significant difference between manual estimates and un-enhanced estimates (p = 0.049) that was corrected using enhanced algorithms. Subsequent analysis of percent cropland revealed that measurements of land cover proportions were not always affected by delineation errors. However, differences were large enough to influence regressions with stream nitrate-N at the 90 percent confidence level within one physiographic province. Enhanced delineations produced statistical relationships between percent cropland and nitrate-N concentrations consistent with manual delineations. The results provide support for enhanced automated watershed delineation within the Chesapeake Basin and suggest that normalized excavation can be an effective augmentation of existing stream burning and reconditioning procedures.
