[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Building patterns are important features that should be preserved in the map generalization process. However, the patterns are not explicitly accessible to automated systems. This paper proposes a framework and several algorithms that automatically recognize building patterns from topographic data, with a focus on collinear and curvilinear alignments. For both patterns two algorithms are developed, which are able to recognize alignment-of-center and alignment-of-side patterns. The presented approach integrates aspects of computational geometry, graph-theoretic concepts and theories of visual perception. Although the individual algorithms for collinear and curvilinear patterns show great potential for each type of the patterns, the recognized patterns are neither complete nor of enough good quality. We therefore advocate the use of a multi-algorithm paradigm, where a mechanism is proposed to combine results from different algorithms to improve the recognition quality. The potential of our method is demonstrated by an application of the framework to several real topographic datasets. The quality of the recognition results are validated in an expert survey. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (Auteur) Small Footprint LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been proposed as an effective tool for measuring detailed biophysical characteristics of forests over broad spatial scales. However, by itself LiDAR yields only a sample of the true 3D structure of a forest. In order to extract useful forestry relevant information, this data must be interpreted using mathematical models and computer algorithms that infer or estimate specific forest metrics. For these outputs to be useful, algorithms must be validated and/or calibrated using a sub-sample of ‘known’ metrics measured using more detailed, reliable methods such as field sampling. In this paper, we describe a novel method for delineating and deriving metrics of individual trees from LiDAR data based on watershed segmentation. Because of the costs involved with collecting both LiDAR data and field samples for validation, we use synthetic LiDAR data to validate and assess the accuracy of our algorithm. This synthetic LiDAR data is generated using a simple geometric model of Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) trees and a simulation of LiDAR sampling. Our results suggest that point densities greater than 2 and preferably greater than 4 points per m2 are necessary to obtain accurate forest inventory data from Loblolly pine stands. However the results also demonstrate that the detection errors (i.e. the accuracy and biases of the algorithm) are intrinsically related to the structural characteristics of the forest being measured. We argue that experiments with synthetic data are directly useful to forest managers to guide the design of operational forest inventory studies. In addition, we argue that the development of LiDAR simulation models and experiments with the data they generate represents a fundamental and useful approach to designing, improving and exploring the accuracy and efficiency of LiDAR algorithms. [Termes IGN] transformationRésumé : (Auteur) Homologous feature point extraction is a key problem in the multi-sensor image registration. In this paper, a new feature point extraction method using nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) and an adaptive shrink operator (ASO_NSCT) for multi-sensor image registration is proposed. Moreover, this proposed feature matching is different from the traditional feature matching strategies and is performed using a similarity measure computed from neighborhood circles in low-frequency bands. Then, a number of reliable matched couples with even distributions are obtained, which assures the accuracy of the registration. Applications of the proposed algorithm to different optical images as well as optical and synthetic aperture radar images show that, in each case, a large number of accurate matched couples could be identified. Additionally, the RMSE patterns are analyzed and comparisons of the parameters are carried out between the registration models and the actual ground structures, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. In this paper, we investigate the case of road border detection using LIDAR data. The aim is to propose a system recognizing curbs and curb ramps and to reconstruct the missing information in case of occlusion. A prediction/estimation process (inspired by Kalman filter models) has been analyzed. The map of angle deviation to ground normal is considered as a feature set, helping to characterize efficiently curbs while curb ramps and occluded curbs have been handled with the proposed model. Such a method may be used for both road map modeling and driver-assistance systems. A user interface scheme has also been described, providing an effective tool for semi-automatic processing of a large amount of data. The challenge consists in finding a content representation that allows you to effectively compare sketches and images, while supporting efficient retrieval in order to make the system scalable. We put forward a sketch-based image retrieval solution where sketches and natural image contours are represented and compared in the wavelet domain. The relevant information regarding query sketches and image content has, thus, a compact representation that can be readily employed by an efficient index for retrieval by similarity. Furthermore, with this solution, the balance between effectiveness and efficiency can be easily modified in order to adapt to the available resources. A comparative evaluation with a state-of-the-art method on the Paris dataset and a subset with 535K images of the ImageNet dataset shows that our solution can preserve effectiveness while being more than one order of magnitude faster.
