[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article demonstrates a working method to automatically detect and prune portions of waterbody polygons to support creation of a multi-scale hydrographic database. Water features are sensitive to scale change, therefore multiple representations are required to maintain visual and geographic logic at smaller scales. Partial pruning of polygonal features – such as long, sinuous reservoir arms, stream channels too narrow at the target scale, and islands that begin to coalesce – entails concurrent management of the length and width of polygonal features as well as integrating pruned polygons with other generalized point and linear hydrographic features to maintain stream network connectivity. The implementation follows data representation standards developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Portions of polygonal rivers, streams, and canals are automatically characterized for width, length, and connectivity. This article describes an algorithm for automatic detection and subsequent processing, and shows results for a sample of NHD subbasins in different landscape conditions in the US. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Line generalization is an essential data processing operation in geographic information systems and cartography. Many point reduction and simplification algorithms have been developed for this purpose. During the last three decades, several attempts have been made to develop approaches of generalization that adapt to the geometric properties of the processed lines. They typically incorporate line segmentation based on quantitative descriptions of the line shape. Little attention has been paid to the cases in which heterogeneous lines of different geometric character are mixed in one dataset. One common example is administrative borders, which often contain natural and artificial, smooth and sharp, schematic and non-schematic, and regular and irregular shapes. The tuning of the simplification algorithm based on a quantitative description of the shape would be ineffective here, since different algorithms must be applied to lines of different characters. In this article, we present a general method and generalization model for the simplification of such datasets. The properties of schematism, smoothness and regularity are used to differentiate various line characters. Three line characters, including irregular non-schematic, irregular schematic and regular orthogonal schematic, were selected for the current study. The developed generalization model consists of preprocessing, processing and postprocessing stages. Line segmentation based on the detection of different characters is performed during the preprocessing stage. Then, Li–Openshaw, Douglas–Peucker and orthogonal simplification are applied to the appropriate segments in the processing stage. Postprocessing enables the addition of extra regularity to the simplified shape. A visual and quantitative assessment of the results is provided and demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed approach in comparison with the global application of a single simplification algorithm. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The article is composed of two sections. In the first section, the authors describe the application of minimum line dimensions which are dependent on line shape, width and the operational scale of the map. The proposed solutions are based on the Euclidean metric space, for which the minimum dimensions of Saliszczew’s elementary triangle (Elementary triangle – is the term pertaining to model, standard triangle of least dimensions securing recognizability of a line. Its dimensions depend on scale of the map and width of the line representing it. The use of a triangle in the simplification process is as follows: triangles with sides (sections) on an arbitrary line and bases (completing the sides) are compared with lengths of the shorter side and the base of the elementary triangle.) were adapted. The second part of the article describes an application of minimum line dimensions for verifying and assessing generalized data. The authors also propose a method for determining drawing line resolution to evaluate the accuracy of algorithm simplification. Taking advantage of the proposed method, well-known simplification algorithms were compared on the basis of qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Moreover, corresponding with the methods of simplified data accuracy assessment the authors have extended these solutions with the rejected data. This procedure has allowed the identification of map areas where graphic conflicts occurred. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) To enable smooth zooming, we propose a method to continuously generalize buildings from a given start map to a smaller-scale goal map, where there are only built-up area polygons instead of individual building polygons. We name the buildings on the start map original buildings. For an intermediate scale, we aggregate the original buildings that will become too close by adding bridges. We grow (bridged) original buildings based on buffering, and simplify the grown buildings. We take into account the shapes of the buildings both at the previous map and goal map to make sure that the buildings are always growing. The running time of our method is in O (n3), where n is the number of edges of all the original buildings.
The advantages of our method are as follows. First, the buildings grow continuously and, at the same time, are simplified. Second, right angles of buildings are preserved during growing: the merged buildings still look like buildings. Third, the distances between buildings are always larger than a specified threshold. We do a case study to show the performances of our method.Numéro de notice : C2017-027 Affiliation des auteurs : LASTIG COGIT+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Communication nature-HAL : ComAvecCL&ActesPubliésIntl DOI : 10.1145/3152178.3152188 Date de publication en ligne : 01/12/2017 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1145/3152178.3152188 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=89290 mR-V: Line simplification through mnemonic rasterization / Emmanuel Stefanakis in Geomatica [en ligne], vol 70 n° 4 (December 2016)
