[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper summarizes some of the key architectural elements and reviews some of the results of the AGENT project, a research project funded by the European Commission between 12/1997 and 11/2000 as part of the Esprit Programme. The project involved five partners and successfully developed a prototype system to deal with
automated map generalization. The prototype is based on Laser-Scan's object-oriented GIS and map production system LAMPS2, uses a multi-agent approach to model cartographic objects and their treatinent in generalization, and uses various newly developed geometric algorithms to measure and transform the cartographic objects in the generalisation process. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an integrated technique for the generalization of contour maps. The technique consists of an objective line generalization algorithm (Li-Openshaw algorithm) and an algorithm for the derivation of a new contour from two original neighbouring contours. The algorithms are implemented in such a way that they guarentee (a) no self-intersection within a line and no-crossintersection between lines ; (b) very smooth resultant contours and ; (c) very coherent relationship between resultant contour lines with very faithful shape to the original contours (at a larger scale). These conclusions have been supported by experimental tests. One of such tests was carried out through comparing the generalized results with the original contour lines and the other is through a comparison with a popular algorithm (Douglas-Peucker). [Termes IGN] rivièreRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new method is described for generalizing lines that makes use of a geometric transformation and the DouglasPeucker method for selection and elimination of the primary line points. The selected points are assembled into segments. In each segment, the points are analysed to determine whether they should be eliminated or whether a new point should be inserted. In the segments where a new point is generated, it is possible to optimize the length or area of the line after generalization. The process terminates when the generalized line maintains the required accuracy. [Termes IGN] simplification de contourRésumé : (Auteur) This study examines the effects of line simplification on the positional accuracy of linear features. The goal is to quantify the relation between the level of simplification and the degree of positional error, so that users can choose appropriate levels of simplification that will yield results meeting specific accuracy criteria. The study focuses on the Douglas-Peucker line simplification algorithm and examines both natural and anthropogenic features (streams and roads) derived from United States Geological Survey Digital Line Graphs. Results show that error can be modelled at an aggregate level using cumulative frequency curves and their confidence limits. This makes it possible to identify the level of simplification that eliminates the largest number of vertices while still attaining a specific positional accuracy standard. A simple implementation strategy is described in which an optimal level of simplification is identified and simplification is applied selectively for different lines. The study shows that management of simplification-induced error is possible using simple tools well within the reach of GIS users.
