[Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Internet-based Geographical Information Services (GIServices) have exploded in depth and variety over the past few years. More and more academic institutions, private companies, and even individuals publish their own geographical information resources in the form of GIServices on the Internet. In today's resource-rich environment, fast and accurate service discovery is a significant problem for industry and academia, as well as regular users. To solve this problem, researchers introduced Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to the domain of GIServices. Being the core of SOA, a registry catalogue implements message exchange services. But current catalog service mechanisms lack the capability to search services, to monitor and to provide accurate descriptions for quality of service in an active manner. Therefore, current catalogue services are not able to overcome problems such as limited registered resources, inaccurate registration information and the uncertainty of service status in various geospatial applications. A catalogue framework for GIServices is proposed that effectively integrates the Quality of GIServices (QoGIService) theory, as well as service crawling/search and dynamic monitoring techniques. A prototype application focused on Web Map Services (WMS) was established that mitigated the abovementioned problems through active service evaluation and real-time quality monitoring mechanisms. [Termes IGN] Web Coverage ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Numerical models produce output with a large number of variables, grid cells and time steps. The same applies to algorithms that produce gridded datasets from sparse or abundant raw data. Further use of the resulting data products has been challenging, especially for dissemination outside the institute of origin. Due to the gradually increasing size of data products, simply downloading copies of them is becoming impossible. A gradual transition from traditional download methods to web services is therefore observed. Web services allow for on-the-fly access to subsets of data that were hitherto considered as indivisible granules. Here we compare the most mature candidates to serve gridded data through the web: the Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) protocols. In the framework of the new Dutch National Model and Data Centre (NMDC.eu) a distributed data storage has been created by coupling OPeNDAP servers. A WCS service layer is provided for the same data. This allows us to compare OPeNDAP and WCS. Using several use cases, we compare the usability, performance and features of the two protocols. [Termes IGN] PostgreSQLRésumé : (Auteur) The Wales Institute of Socio-Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) is an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional academic research group based in Wales, UK. One of the key objectives of WISERD is to develop a spatial framework that enhances a researcher's ability to discover socio-economic research data relating to Wales with the aim of encouraging collaborative research and re-use of existing data. This article describes the development of an online geoportal designed to meet this objective. Using free and open-source software (FOSS) components and services, a range of software tools has been developed to capture standards-compliant metadata for a variety of data sources. The geoportal is unique in that, in our review of over 120 geoportals worldwide, we have not previously encountered a geoportal dedicated to supporting quantitative and qualitative social science academic and policy research. A particularly innovative aspect of the geoportal has involved the building of a rich meta-database of government surveys, geo-referenced semantically-tagged qualitative data (generated from primary research), ‘grey’ data (e.g. from transcripts, journal publications, books, PhD theses) and Government administrative data. This article describes the challenges faced during the development of the WISERD Geoportal which can be accessed via http://www.wiserd.ac.uk/geoportal/. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) In the State Archive of Como, Northern Italy, about 15,000 historical maps belonging to different national cadastral productions are preserved. The Web C.A.R.T.E. project was started to enhance the accessibility of this valuable cartographic heritage using FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) technologies. The system, which implements specific web geoservices for cataloguing and visualization, should assist the State Archive of Como in the digital management of its cartographic resources and related information. After the high-resolution digitization step, maps undergo a georeferencing operation. A special statistical procedure for choosing the best mathematical model was developed, verifying also strengths and weaknesses of georeferencing with a common free and Open Source GIS. Next, metadata consistent with current Italian standards were added to the georeferenced maps using an ad hoc localized version of GeoNetwork Opensource (recently provided as the official Italian version of the software). A dedicated WebGIS system was built for publishing the georeferenced cadastral maps. This system is capable of navigating large raster data in a georeferenced framework and easily retrieving their metadata. The WebGIS system for the State Archive of Como is an important contribution for the preservation of the original historical paper maps and also a great modernization and simplification of the end user's access to this archive. [Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Geoportal.DE reveals the contents of the Spatial Data Infrastructure of Germany (GDI-DE). It utilizes several Web Services from GDI-DE. Users can promptly search within the central search engine of GDI-DE (Geodatenkatalog-DE), which currently contains around 80.000 decentrally maintained sets of metadata on spatial data and spatial data services from across all levels of public administration in Germany. Many of the described spatial data sets can be easily added to the Map Viewer, which offers three different background maps based on the official basic spatial data from the surveying authorities of the federaI states: the WebAtlasDE (color, gray) and digital orthoimages. Geoportal.DE is completed by a search utility for places and addresses and several thematic maps covering Germany. This contribution describes the technical architecture and gives details on the utilized Web Services from GDI-DE.
