[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) As Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies have evolved, more and more GIS applications and geospatial data are available on the web. Spatial objects in a given query range can be retrieved using spatial range query - one of the most widely used query types in GIS and spatial databases. However, it can be challenging to retrieve these data from various web applications where access to the data is only possible through restrictive web interfaces that support certain types of queries. A typical scenario is the existence of numerous business web sites that provide their branch locations through a limited “nearest location” web interface. For example, a chain restaurant’s web site such as McDonalds can be queried to find some of the closest locations of its branches to the user’s home address. However, even though the site has the location data of all restaurants in, for example, the state of California, it is difficult to retrieve the entire data set efficiently due to its restrictive web interface. Considering that k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) search is one of the most popular web interfaces in accessing spatial data on the web, this paper investigates the problem of retrieving geospatial data from the web for a given spatial range query using only k-NN searches. Based on the classification of k-NN interfaces on the web, we propose a set of range query algorithms to completely cover the rectangular shape of the query range (completeness) while minimizing the number of k-NN searches as possible (efficiency). We evaluated the efficiency of the proposed algorithms through statistical analysis and empirical experiments using both synthetic and real data sets. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial processing is increasingly prevalent in the modern computing milieu. In particular, geographic information retrieval and location-based services such as GoogleEarth and MapQuest depend on spatial operations in conjunction with gazetteers to georeference geographic features. However, many gazetteers contain only point locations or simple bounding rectangles, which make for erratic and sometimes poor georeferencing. Convex hulls can provide better georeferencing results at modest computational cost, but their shape fidelity is still erratic. Full GIS capabilities are actually overfit for many geospatial and georeferencing purposes, because of the limited accuracy of the underlying data. The financial and technical demands of GIS also exclude it from many markets. Described here is a new technique, multihulls, based on the iterative refinement of convex hulls. Multihulls achieve arbitrary shape fidelity at a small increment in computational cost, consistent with the data, outside a GIS, making them attractive for many geospatial and georeferencing applications, especially gazetteers. [Termes IGN] toponyme flouRésumé : (Auteur) Place names are often used to describe and to enquire about geographical information. It is common for users to employ vernacular names that have vague spatial extent and which do not correspond to the official and administrative place name terminology recorded within typical gazetteers. There is a need therefore to enrich gazetteers with knowledge of such vague places and hence improve the quality of place name-based information retrieval. Here we describe a method for modelling vague places using knowledge harvested from Web pages. It is found that vague place names are frequently accompanied in text by the names of more precise co-located places that lie within the extent of the target vague place. Density surface modelling of the frequency of co-occurrence of such names provides an effective method of representing the inherent uncertainty of the extent of the vague place while also enabling approximate crisp boundaries to be derived from contours if required. The method is evaluated using both precise and vague places. The use of the resulting approximate boundaries is demonstrated using an experimental geographical search engine.
