Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (auteur) The increasing amount of spatial data demands effective and efficient methods for managing them in spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). Metadata standards have been developed in response to the needs of data custodians who manage these ever-growing resources and in recognition of the end users’ need for easy access and discovery of spatial data. Data custodians prepare metadata records and allow SDIs to harvest them. The harvesting can be undertaken through metadata standards or data service standards. The metadata updating processes are not efficient and, therefore, create a disjoint between the data and its metadata. As a result, end users cannot realize the full potential of metadata records. In addressing this issue, the paper presents an automatic spatial metadata system with a suite of functions including metadata monitoring, enrichment, and maintenance to enable the data custodians to manage the integrity of their metadata records in SDIs. These functions have been demonstrated and reviewed through a case study in the Australian Urban Infrastructure Network (AURIN). Using these functions, AURIN’s data custodians have been able to offer over 1200 coherent and consistent spatial metadata records to end users. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Given the precedent findings of health inequalities in Hamilton, ON and the rapid increase of elderly populations in Canada as a whole, this article looks for areas of deficient health services within the Hamilton region, characterized as “healthcare deserts,” and examines the possible implications with respect to the residing senior populations. Maps were constructed by overlaying median household income and percentage of population over 65 with the locations of healthcare services frequented by seniors. Qualitative analysis revealed that the distribution of senior services has no correlation to the senior population, and that senior services tend to be concentrated in lower income areas. This research has exposed the existence of healthcare deserts in most regions of Hamilton except the downtown core. Since seniors are less able to travel longer distances, living far away from these services could act as a barrier, inhibiting access and reducing quality of life. Concerns regarding accessibility of health services will become more important as this demographic grows, so mapping services in this manner can inform urban planning to minimize the impacts of these deserts. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Numerous cities in developing regions worldwide are expanding at a tremendous rate. This requires adequate strategies to address the needs of these growing cities with diverse populations. Nonetheless, the development of urban policies is often hampered by the lack of reliable data or insight in the socio-spatial dynamics of this urban expansion. This paper therefore presents ASSURE, a spatially and temporally explicit model that can simulate urban growth and intra-urban social segregation, taking into account alternative policy strategies and expected social dynamics. The model has a flexible structure that allows incorporating specific city conditions that influence residential decision-making and adapting the simulation to the data available. This, in combination with the transparent model structure, makes ASSURE a potentially valuable decision support tool for urban planning. The potential is demonstrated with an example where the urban growth of and social segregation in Kampala (Uganda) is simulated based on (semi-)quantitative and qualitative data for ca. 800 households collected through interviews. The results of the simulations show that depending on the scenario, the spatial segregation and accessibility problems will evolve highly differently.
