[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Understanding urban mobility patterns is constrained by our limited capabilities to extract and visualize spatio-temporal regularities from large amounts of mobility data. Moving flocks, defined as groups of people traveling along over a pre-defined time duration, can reveal collective moving patterns at aggregated spatio-temporal scales, thereby facilitating the discovery of urban mobility structure and travel demand patterns. In this study, we extend classical trajectory-oriented flock mining algorithms to discover moving flocks of transit passengers, accounting for the constraints of multi-modal transit networks. We develop a map-centered visual analytics approach by integrating the flock mining algorithm with interactive visualization designs of discovered flocks. Novel interactive visualizations are designed and implemented to support the exploration and analyses of discovered moving flocks at different spatial and temporal scales. The visual analytics approach is evaluated using a real-world smart card dataset collected in Shenzhen City, China, validating its applicability in capturing and mapping dynamic mobility patterns over a large metropolitan area. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (auteur) Fine-grained inner-annual population data are instrumental in climate change response, resource allocation, and epidemic control. However, such data are currently scarce due to the lack of human-related indicators with both high temporal resolution and long-term coverage that can be used in the process of population spatialization. Here, we estimate monthly 1-km gridded population distribution across China in 2015 using time-series mobile phone positioning data. We construct a hybrid downscaling model to map the gridded population by incorporating random forest and area-to-point kriging. The estimated monthly population products appear to capture inner-annual population variations, especially during special periods, such as the festival, holiday, and short-term labor flow period, which are characterized by large-scale population movements. Additionally, compared with census data, the hybrid model-based results obtained exhibit higher consistency than popular global population products across all spatial extents. Our monthly 1-km data products for the population distribution across China in 2015 provide a credible dataset that can be employed in studies aimed at accurate population-dependent decisions. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (auteur) Forest fire burnt area estimation using Normalized Burn Ratio at regional level helps in understanding the pattern of the frequency and severity of forest fires. In this study, burnt area is estimated for all the thirteen districts of Indian state Uttarakhand for last six years from 2016 to 2021 using Sentinel 2A and 2B datasets. The spatial and temporal pattern of the burnt area was analyzed by incorporating different parameters such as meteorological parameters like land surface temperature, rainfall; edaphic parameter like surface soil moisture and vegetation parameters like Normalized Difference Vegetation Index & Enhanced Vegetation Index. The estimated burnt area was statistically analyzed with respect to the parameters stated and the relationship among them was quantified. It was found that burnt area is positively correlated with the land surface temperature, while it showed negative correlation with the pre-fire precipitation, pre-fire NDVI & EVI and the surface soil moisture for 11 out of 13 districts. The district-wise forest fire burnt area assessment and analysis of its spatio-temporal pattern can be used in the preparedness and mitigation planning to prevent drastic ecological impacts of forest fires on the landscape. Each year, thousands of fish, sea birds, sea turtles, and other marine species are killed by ingesting or becoming entangled with plastic debris. Reducing marine plastic pollution is particularly challenging for developing countries owing to the wide dispersal of plastic waste disposal and scarce public cleanup resources. To costeffectively reduce marine pollution, resources should target “hotspot” areas, where large volumes of plastic litter have a high likelihood of ending up in the ocean. Using new public information, this study develops a hotspot targeting strategy for Accra and Lagos, which are major sources of marine plastic pollution in West Africa. The same global information sources can support hotspot analyses for many other coastal cities that generate marine plastic waste. The methodology combines georeferenced household survey data on plastic use, measures of seasonal variation in marine plastic pollution from satellite imagery, and a model of plastic waste transport to the ocean that uses information on topography, seasonal rainfall, drainage to rivers, and river transport to the ocean. For cleanup, the results for West Africa assign the highest locational priority to areas with heavy plastic-waste disposal along river channels or in steeply sloped locations with high rainfall runoff potential near rivers. They assign the highest temporal priority to just before the onset of the first-semester rainy season, when runoff from the first rains transports large volumes of plastic waste that have accumulated during the dry season. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) Spatial flow co-location patterns (FCLPs) are important for understanding the spatial dynamics and associations of movements. However, conventional point-based co-location pattern discovery methods ignore spatial movements between locations and thus may generate erroneous findings when applied to spatial flows. Despite recent advances, there is still a lack of methods for analyzing multivariate flows. To bridge the gap, this paper formulates a novel problem of FCLP discovery and presents an effective detection method based on frequent-pattern mining and spatial statistics. We first define a flow co-location index to quantify the co-location frequency of different features in flow neighborhoods, and then employ a bottom-up method to discover all frequent FCLPs. To further establish the statistical significance of the results, we develop a flow pattern reconstruction method to model the benchmark null hypothesis of independence conditioning on univariate flow characteristics (e.g. flow autocorrelation). Synthetic experiments with predefined FCLPs verify the advantages of our method in terms of correctness over available alternatives. A case study using individual home-work commuting flow data in the Chicago Metropolitan Area demonstrates that residence- or workplace-based co-location patterns tend to overestimate the co-location frequency of people with different occupations and could lead to inconsistent results.
