[Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (auteur) The past 25 years have seen a proliferation of interest in GIS among humanists and humanistic social scientists. Under various banners – historical GIS, qualitative and mixed methods GIS, spatial and digital history, digital humanities, spatial humanities or geohumanities – researchers have developed new ways to include qualitative data within the framework of GIS. At the same time, social and theoretical critiques of GIS as a tool wielded chiefly by and for those in power have increased awareness of its limitations, particularly for studying human perceptions, experiences, and the meanings of place. We agree with a growing chorus of geographers that the most common data structures in GIS are inadequate to capture or analyze the relational dimensions of subjectivity. As part of the solution, we propose an alternative hybrid framework that prioritizes topological relationships while retaining coordinate locations as points of connection between geographic places and experiential evidence. This article explains how the challenges posed by Holocaust survivor testimony inspired us to pursue inductive spatial analysis and non-coordinate means of mapping. We then set out a model for a topological GIS and illustrate its application with two survivor testimonies and a map of their experiences. [Termes IGN] SIG participatifRésumé : (auteur) The parallel processing and distributed GIServices provide an efficient approach to address the geocomputation challenges in biodiversity modeling. Using the widely applied Spatial Biodiversity Model (SBM) as an illustration, this study demonstrates parallelization of the spatial landscape algorithms based on Message Passing Interface (MPI) in cluster computing. The geocomputation based on MPI is performed to characterize the spatial distribution of Biological Richness (BR) for Indian landscape using developed high-performance cluster computing-based model named as SBM-HPC. In performance analysis, the execution time is reduced by 56.42%–81.41% (or the speedups of 2.29–5.38) using the parallel and cluster computing environment. Also, the spatial landscape algorithms of the model are extended to integrate large-scale geodata from online map services archives using distributed GIServices. To validate BR map, the phytosociological data is collected using participatory GIS approach. Furthermore, regression analysis between derived BR map and Shannon-Wiener index (Hˈ) represents high correlation coefficient R2 values.
Highlights :
- Development of spatial biodiversity model using parallel computing on the cluster.
- Geocomputation of spatial landscape indices using large-scale geospatial datasets.
- Distributed GIService integration in model to compute distributed data archives.
- Prediction of biological richness pattern and validation using participatory GIS.
- Characterize correlations between biological richness and bioclimatic patterns.

[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) We present data and analyses on school teaching practises that relate spatial thinking with the learning of maps from a cartographic education perspective. This study intends to support further research in the field of school cartography, given the increasing availability of digital cartographic resources in both the formal and the informal environments frequented by the individual. This increase in information demands a careful and critical reading of the cartographic data, although this requires a clear understanding of cartographic elements on the part of the individual. This reinforces the role of teachers in the classroom, given that they can contribute to the development of critical reasoning though the analysis of current geographic problems during learning activities in school cartography. The results presented here emphasize the importance of these contributions, but also demand substantial and consistent teacher training, in particular on the theories of spatial thinking. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Thoughtful consideration of the enumeration unit size in choropleth map design is important to ensure the correct communication of spatial information. However, the enumeration unit size and its influence on pattern conveying in choropleth maps have not yet been the subject of in-depth empirical studies. This research aims to address this gap. We focused on the issue concerning whether the ability to recognize spatial patterns on an Equal Area Unit Map is related to the hexagonal enumeration unit size, defined by the number of pixels. The aim is to indicate the range of the enumeration unit sizes, namely, at what point the upper and lower borders of the range where the spatial patterns start, and where the end is visible and recognizable by users. To address this problem, we conducted an empirical study with 488 users. The results show that the enumeration unit size has an impact on the users’ spatial pattern recognition abilities. Choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 26, 52, and 104 pixels were, in the majority, indicated by participants as those most suitable for indicating spatial patterns. This was in contrast to choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 1664 and 3328 pixels, which users indicated as not being useful. However, there were some exceptions to this general finding. Thus, determining the optimal enumeration unit size is a challenging task, and requires further insightful investigations.
