[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional image processing techniques have proven inadequate for urban mapping using high spatial resolution remote-sensing images. This study examined and evaluated wavelet transforms for urban texture analysis and image classification using high spatial resolution ATLAS imagery. For the purpose of comparison and to evaluate the effectiveness of the wavelet approaches, two different fractal approaches (isarithm and triangular prism), spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I and Geary's C), and spatial co-occurrence matrix of the selected urban classes were examined using 65 X 65, 33 X 33, and 17 X 17 samples with a pixel size of 2.5 m. Results from this study suggest that a multi-band and multi-level wavelet approach can be used to drastically increase the classification accuracy. The fractal techniques did not provide satisfactory classification accuracy. Spatial autocorrelation and spatial co-occurrence techniques were found to be relatively effective when compared to the fractal approaches. It can be concluded that the wavelet transform approach is the most accurate of all four approaches. [Termes IGN] représentation des connaissancesRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a formalism and a programming environment in which sophisticated spatio-temporal reasoning can be performed, while keeping the capabilities of manipulating and presenting large amounts of geographical data, typical of commercial Geographical Information Systems (GISs). The spatiotemporal knowledge representation language, named MuTACLP+, is based on constraint logic programming and is integrated via a middleware of commands and translation features with a commercial GIS. The paper presents the language, the architecture of the environment, and a few examples of its use in the field of event planning. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Water resources can play a vital role in the economic development of a country. In Jordan, water resources are scarce and decreasing, and groundwater is considered the major water resource. The Azraq is one of the largest groundwater basins in Jordan, and it is currently facing an over-extraction problem. This study attempts to assess and map groundwater resources in the Azraq Basin using ARCVIEW GIS software. The relationship between land topography and depth-to-water surface was found to be statistically significant, while there was no significant association between land topography and groundwater level. Two essential thematic layers were created-depth to groundwater and groundwater level and the slope of groundwater level was mapped. The majority of the study area has a slope of less than four degrees with smaller scattered areas were the slope could rise up to 8,6 degrees. The results indicate that, due to the nature of the data involved and the analysis required, GIS could facilitate the necessary spatial digital analysis. Subsequently, its outcomes can be used for future groundwater planning and monitoring. [Termes IGN] interpolationRésumé : (Auteur) Investigators in many fields are analyzing temporal change in spatial data. Such analyses are typically conducted by comparing the value of some metric (e.g., area, contagion, or diversity indices) measured at time T1, with the value of the same metric measured at time T2, These comparisons typically include the use of simple interpolation models to estimate the value of the metric of interest at points in time between observations, followed by applications of differential calculus to investigate the rates at which the metric is changing. Unfortunately, these techniques treat the values of the metrics being analyzed as if they were observed values, when in fact the metrics are derived from more fundamental spatial data. The consequence of treating metrics as observed values is a significant reduction in the degrees of freedom in spatial change over time. This results in an oversimplified view of spatio-temporal change. A more accurate view can be produced by (1) applying temporal interpolation models to observed spatial data rather than derived spatial metrics; (2) expanding the metric of interest's computational equation by replacing the terms relating to the observed spatial data with their temporal interpolation equations; and (3) differentiating the expanded computational equation. This alternative, three-step spatio-temporal analysis technique will be described and justified. The alternative technique will be compared to the conventional approach using common metrics and a sample data set.
