[Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) Urban functions are closely related to people’s spatiotemporal activity patterns, transportation needs, and a city’s business distribution and development trends. Studies investigating urban functions have used different data sources, such as remotely sensed imageries, observation, photography, and cognitive maps. However, these data sources usually suffer from low spatial, temporal, and thematic resolution. This article attempts to investigate human activities to understand urban functions through crowdsourcing social media data. In this study, we mined Twitter and Foursquare data to extract and analyze six types of human activities. The spatiotemporal analysis revealed hotspots for different activity intensities at different temporal resolution. We also applied the classified model in a real-time system to extract information of various urban functions. This study demonstrates the significance and usefulness of social sensing in analyzing urban functions. By combining different platforms of social media data and analyzing people’s geo-tagged city experience, this article contributes to leverage voluntary local knowledge to better depict human dynamics, discover spatiotemporal city characteristics, and convey information about cities. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (Auteur) Twitter has become an important data source for detecting events, especially tracking detailed information for events of a specific domain. Previous studies on targeted-domain Twitter information extraction have used supervised learning techniques to identify domain-related tweets, however, the need for extensive manual labeling makes these supervised systems extremely expensive to build and maintain. What’s more, most of these existing work fail to consider spatiotemporal factors, which are essential attributes of target-domain events. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised method for Automatical Targeted-domain Spatiotemporal Event Detection (ATSED) in Twitter. Given a targeted domain, ATSED first learns tweet labels from historical data, and then detects on-going events from real-time Twitter data streams. Specifically, an efficient label generation algorithm is proposed to automatically recognize tweet labels from domain-related news articles, a customized classifier is created for Twitter data analysis by utilizing tweets’ distinguishing features, and a novel multinomial spatial-scan model is provided to identify geographical locations for detected events. Experiments on 305 million tweets demonstrated the effectiveness of this new approach. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Habitat-type land cover on Horn Island, Mississippi, northern Gulf of Mexico, was estimated for the years 1940 and 2010 using a combination of panchromatic imagery and 2010 ground survey data. A grey-level co-occurrence matrix was applied to compute reflectance coefficient of variation (CV) and texture indices. The relationships of 2010 CV ranges with known habitat types defined training regions of interest in the 1940 imagery as a substitute for 1940 ground data. Texture indices contrast, correlation, energy and entropy then served as input bands for maximum likelihood classifications which produced 1940 and 2010 habitat maps. Analysis determined that wetter habitats on Horn expanded linearly over the seven-decade period. This is attributed to constraints on sediment supply and the impacts of severe storms which led to decreases in soil depth to the water table. If this trend continues, marsh habitat will cover 31% of Horn Island’s land area by 2050. [Termes IGN] test statistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) We intend to identify relationships between cancer cases and pollutant emissions by proposing a novel co-location mining algorithm. In this context, we specifically attempt to understand whether there is a relationship between the location of a child diagnosed with cancer with any chemical combinations emitted from various facilities in that particular location. Co-location pattern mining intends to detect sets of spatial features frequently located in close proximity to each other. Most of the previous works in this domain are based on transaction-free apriori-like algorithms which are dependent on user-defined thresholds, and are designed for boolean data points. Due to the absence of a clear notion of transactions, it is nontrivial to use association rule mining techniques to tackle the co-location mining problem. Our proposed approach is focused on a grid based transactionization? of the geographic space, and is designed to mine datasets with extended spatial objects. It is also capable of incorporating uncertainty of the existence of features to model real world scenarios more accurately. We eliminate the necessity of using a global threshold by introducing a statistical test to validate the significance of candidate co-location patterns and rules. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets reveal that our algorithm can detect a considerable amount of statistically significant co-location patterns. In addition, we explain the data modelling framework which is used on real datasets of pollutants (PRTR/NPRI) and childhood cancer cases. [Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) GNSS Reflectometry, Scatterometry and Radio Occultation aboard ISS is the mission concept under study within the European Space Agency. Its core payload consists of an interferometric GNSS-Reflectometry ocean altimeter/scatterometer which does not need to generate any clean replicas of the GNSS codes for its operation. This paper describes a new interferometric technique by which such payload could also perform radio occultation as an add-on, without requiring any additional hardware resources, like the generation of clean code replicas or a storage of them. Two possibilities are studied. The first one consists of performing the complex autocorrelation function of the received signal transmitted by a rising or setting GNSS satellite. The autocorrelation function is evaluated around time epochs that are multiples of the period of suitable codes found in the modulation of the navigation signals. Satellite discrimination has to be performed spatially, through the antenna pattern. The second possibility consists in acquiring the reference signal separately from the occultation event which, in turn, has two options depending upon the geometry at which the reference is recorded: zenithal and top of the atmosphere. The signal-to-noise ratio, the satellite discrimination, and the impact of clock errors are assessed.
