Nous nous proposons de valider cette théorie en géographie physique. 11 s'agit donc de déterminer si la morphologie mathématique peut être adapté à l'analyse des données de terrain. Etant donné la multiplicité des problèmes liés à ces données, nos efforts de recherche se sont concentrés sur des cas de figure où les techniques existantes ne donnent que des solutions partielles. Une des caractéristiques principales du terrain est son relief. Les premiers problèmes étudiés se rapporteront donc à l'analyse des données topographiques : génération de distributions spatiales à partir de lignes de contour valuées, détection des lignes de partage des eaux et des réseaux de drainage. La géographie physique ne se limite pas à la seule étude du relief mais concerne également l'analyse des caractéristiques qui lui sont associées. Cependant, quelle que soit la caractéristique étudiée, le morphologue envisage sa distribution spatiale comme un relief imaginaire. Ce relief est imaginaire puisque les unités de la caractéristique mesurée ne sont plus homogènes avec celles de l'espace observé (contrairement au relief topographique où nous avons des unités de longueurs dans tous les cas). Cette rupture d'homogénéité nous conduira à introduire le concept de dimensionalité. Toutes les caractéristiques du terrain pourront être vues, mesurées, et traitées comme des structures spatiales si on prend soin de respecter la contrainte de dimensionalité. Nous proposerons alors une nouvelle méthodologie de partition des images multispectrales où les descripteurs spectraux aussi Bien que spatiaux interviendront. Le développement d'une méthodologie adéquate pour résoudre un problème donné n'est cependant pas suffisant. La pratique montre en effet qu'une méthodologie n'est adoptée que s'il existe des algorithmes efficaces permettant sa mise en oeuvre sur ordinateur. C'est pourquoi, parallèlement aux développements méthodologiques de ce travail, de nombreux développements algorithmiques seront proposés. L'ouvrage est découpé en cinq chapitres. Le chapitre 1 introduit les notations et définitions de base. Les chapitres 2 a 3 concernent la résolution de problèmes associés an relief. Le chapitre 5 fait office de charnière en introduisant le concept de dimensionalité, propriété nécessaire an traitement morphologique des données non altimétriques. Enfin, le chapitre 6 traite de la partition d'images multispectrales telles que les images satellitaires. Note de contenu : Introduction
