[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) [introduction] To be able to estimate length and area accuracy, all the possible sources of geometric uncertainty need to be modeled. Indeed, different causes in the production and representation processes of vector objects impact measurements. In term of representation processes, we know that measurements can be impacted by: - the projection system used; - not taking account of the terrain, involving an under-estimation of lengths and areas. For the production processes, measurements are also impacted by: - the digitizing precision of the operator, usually involved by the scale of capture; - the precision of the sensor, if the database is produced using a GPS; - the polygonal approximation of curves, when objects represented are curved; - effects of cartographic generalization, if the database is captured from maps. If a final user wants to assess the measurement imprecision of its database, he has to take into account all these potential sources of error. To fit with this requirement, our research aims at developing a general model which takes into account all the sources exposed above, and to quantify their respective impact, in order to provide information on measurement imprecision. The expression of digitizing error, and polygonal approximation has already been presented in (Girres and Julien, 2010) and the general model in (Girres and Ruas, 2010). In order to complete the expression of production processes impact on measurements, a study of cartographic generalization effects has to be conducted. In this context, this paper proposes a method to evaluate the effect of cartographic generalization on length measurement, focusing on road networks. The general methodology, as far as the different steps of the evaluation, is presented afterwards. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The scale dependences of topological relations are caused by the changes of spatial objects at different scales, which are induced by the reduction of attributes. Generally, the detailed partitions and multi-scale attributes are stored in spatial databases, while the coarse partitions are not. Consequently, the detailed topological relations can be computed and regarded as known information, while the coarse relations stay unknown. However, many applications (e.g., multi-scale spatial data query) need to deal with the topological relations at multiple scales. In this study new methods are proposed to model and derive the scale dependences of topological relations between lines and multi-scale region partitions. The scale dependences of topological relations are modeled and used to derive the relations between lines and coarse partitions from the relations about the detailed partitions. The derivation can be performed in two steps. At the first step, the topological dependences between a line and two meeting, covered and contained regions are computed and stored into composition tables, respectively. At the second step, a graph is used to represent the neighboring relations among the regions in a detailed partition. The scale dependences and detailed relations are then used to derive topological relations at the coarse level. Our methods can also be extended to handle the scale dependences of relations about disconnected regions, or the combinations of connected and disconnected regions. Because our methods use the scale dependences to derive relations at the coarse level, rather than generating coarse partition and computing the relations with geometric information, they are more efficient to support scale-dependent applications. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an object-based conceptual framework and numerical algorithms for representing and analyzing coastal morphological and volumetric changes based on repeat airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) surveys. This method identifies and delineates individual zones of erosion and deposition as discrete objects. The explicit object representation of erosion and deposition zones is consistent with the perception and cognition of human analysts and geomorphologists. The extracted objects provide ontological and epistemological foundation to localize, represent, and interpret erosion and deposition patches for better coastal resource management and erosion control. The discrete objects are much better information carriers than the grid cells in the field-based representation of source data. A set of spatial and volumetric attributes are derived to characterize and quantify location, area, shape, orientation, depth, volume, and other properties of erosion and deposition objects. Compared with the conventional cell-by-cell differencing approaches, our object-based method gives a concise and high-level representation of information and knowledge about coastal morphological dynamics. The derived attributes enable the discrimination of true morphological changes from artifacts caused by data noise and processing errors. Furthermore, the concise object representation of erosion and deposition zones facilitates overlay analysis in conjunction with other GIS data layers for understanding the causes and impacts of morphological and volumetric changes. We have implemented a software tool for our object-based morphological analysis, which will be freely available for the public. An example is used to demonstrate the utility and effectiveness of this new method. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Descriptions of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (geobia) often identify image segmentation as the initial step. This may be reasonable in some cases, but segmentation might also be considered a "black art," due to its image dependence and the limited amount control available to users. The resulting segments reflect the spectral structure of the image rather than the physical structure of the landscape with no one-to-one relationship between real world objects and segments. Geographic analysis often begins in the context of existing mapping. In regions with high quality large scale cartography, an obvious question is why is this information not used in the GEOBIA process? It is therefore proposed that geobia be redefined to use the best existing real world feature datasets as the starting point before segmentation is considered. Such an approach would increase opportunities for integration, improve map update initiatives, and widen uptake by end user communities.
