[Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution (HR) remote-sensing images allow us to access new kinds of information. Classical techniques for image analysis, such as pixel-based classifications or region-based segmentations, do not allow to fully exploit the richness of this kind of images. Indeed, for many applications, we are interested in complex objects which can only be identified and analyzed by studying the relationships between the elementary objects which compose them. In this paper, the use of a spatial reasoning technique called region connection calculus for the analysis of HR remote-sensing images is presented. A graph-based representation of the spatial relationships between the regions of an image is used within a graph-matching procedure in order to implement an object detection algorithm. [Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) We present a new approach for radiometric calibration of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) intensity data and demonstrate an application of this method to natural targets. The method is based on 1) using commercially available sand and gravel as reference targets and 2) the calibration of these reference targets in the laboratory conditions to know their backscatter properties. We have investigated the target properties crucial for accurate and consistent reflectance calibration and present a set of ideal targets easily available for calibration purposes. The first results from LIDAR-based brightness measurement of grass and sand show that the gravel-based calibration approach works in practice, is cost effective, and produces statistically meaningful results: Comparison of results from two separate airborne laser scanning campaigns shows that the relative calibration produces repeatable reflectance values. [Termes IGN] XMLRésumé : (Auteur) Geotechnical data characterizes the geometry and physical properties of soil deposits, which are determined from field observations, in-situ and laboratory tests, and engineering analyses. Until now, geotechnical information was mainly described and exchanged as relational data, which occasionally included spatial characteristics. Hereafter, the spatial features of geotechnical data are investigated by invoking the geotechnical data model of the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS), which is widely used in the United Kingdom to exchange geotechnical data in engineering practice. The basic geometric objects in AGS geotechnical data are first identified. These geometric objects are mapped to basic geometric features of the Geography Markup Language (GML). AGS data can therefore be fully rendered using GML-conformant schemas, which make geotechnical data readily importable into GML-aware applications. The data can be also imported to mainstream GIS applications using Extensible Markup Language (XML) transformations. This article demonstrates the rendition of AGS data format to a GML-conformant schema and illustrates the implementation of the new format through a few geotechnical examples. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents three methods for representing spatial properties of geographic entity types in order to retrieve digital aerial photographs that contain these types. The three methods are semivariogram, edge tracing and an integration of the two methods. The first two methods are used to represent spatial continuity and spatial discontinuity information, respectively, associated with geographic entities, while the integrated method is used to represent both properties. The three methods are used to retrieve seven land cover types; factories, shopping centres, highways, forest, farmland, grasses and residential areas. Results show that between the two independent methods, the semivariogram method generally produces higher retrieval precision and more consistency across the seven types than the edge tracing method. The integrated method considerably outperforms the two independent methods. This paper extends our understanding of topological change, by providing a classification and analysis of events associated with changes in topological structures of spatial areal objects as they evolve through time. Tree structures are employed to represent topological relationships between regions and holes of areal objects. Basic and complex changes are specified using structure-preserving mappings between trees. Furthermore, the paper constructs a normal form, and proves that it is the 'simplest' form that can represent all the changes under consideration.
