The methodology consists of geometry collapse and a symbol knowledge base. Two collapse algorithms are implemented: polygon to point and polygon to line. In particular, we develop a partial collapse algorithm for linear features. A river is represented by lines and polygons depending on the width. To render features with scale changes, a symbol knowledge base is designed to specify scale ranges and symbols for each feature. Finally, a multi-scale rendering tool is developed and applied to the map of Camp Lejune, NC. The symbols in the knowledge base can be accumulated and adapted for various mapping applications. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose the use of Geometric Activity (GA) features for detecting man-made objects in urban areas using VHR satellite imagery. These features describe the geometric context of a pixel without the necessity of segmentation and can be integrated as extra bands in a per-pixel classification. Two main types of GA features were investigated: ridge features based on the well-known facet model and morphological features obtained by applying closing transforms with structuring elements of different size and shape. Our findings show a substantial increase in classification accuracy for the man-made object classes “roads and buildings with dark roof” after inclusion of GA features. Next to GA features, the use of object-based features derived from eCognition®, containing both geometric and textural information, was also investigated for per-pixel classification. Accuracies obtained with object-based features are comparable to the accuracies obtained with GA features. The inclusion of both GA features and object-based features further improves the overall accuracy. GA features and object-based features thus contain complementary information. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) An automated method for 3D modelling of complex highway interchanges is presented. Laser data and 2D topographic map data have been combined in an innovative 3D reconstruction procedure. Complex situations as shown in this paper demand knowledge to guide the automatic reconstruction. This knowledge has been used in the fusion procedure to constrain the topological and geometrical properties of the reconstructed 3D model. These additions are needed to take care of the lack of data in occluded areas. Laser data has been segmented and filtered before it is fused with map data. In the surface-growing algorithm combining map and laser points, the laser data is assigned to the corresponding road element. Although results are shown using two specific data sources, the algorithm is designed to be capable of dealing with any polygon-based topographic map and any aerial laser scanner data-set. [Termes IGN] surface planeRésumé : (Auteur) Building reconstruction from lidar data offers promising prospects for rapid generation of large-scale 3D models autonomously. Such reconstruction requires knowledge on a variety of parameters that refer to both the point cloud and the modeled buildings. The complexity of the reconstruction task has led researchers to use external information to localize buildings and assume that they consist of only planar parts. These assumptions limit the reconstruction of complex buildings, particularly those having curved faces. We present in this paper a detection and reconstruction model that considers the point cloud as the only information source and supports the reconstruction of general shape surfaces. Nonetheless, since many of the buildings are composed of planar faces, we maintain the planar based partitioning whenever possible and model non-planar surfaces only where needed. This way, standard models are extended to support free-form roof shapes without imposing artificial models. In addition to the free-form surface extension, we demonstrate the effect of imposing geometric constraints on the reconstruction as a means to generate realistic building models. [Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) The degree of uncertainty of many geographical objects has long been known to be in intimate relation with the scale of its observation and representation. Yet, the explicit consideration of scaling operations when modeling uncertainty is rarely found. In this study, a neural network-based data model was investigated for representing geographical objects with scale-induced indeterminate boundaries. Two types of neural units, combined with two types of activation function, comprise the processing core of the model, where the activation function can model either hard or soft transition zones. The construction of complex fuzzy regions, as well as lines and points, is discussed and illustrated with examples. It is shown how the level of detail that is apparent in the boundary at a given scale can be controlled through the degree of smoothness of each activation function. Several issues about the practical implementation of the model are discussed and indications on how to perform complex overlay operations of fuzzy maps provided. The model was illustrated through an example of representing multi-resolution, sub-pixel maps that are typically derived from remote sensing techniques.
