[Termes IGN] tunnelRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) is an alternative technique to obtain measurements of surface displacement providing better spatial resolution and comparable accuracy at an extremely lower cost per area than conventional surveying methods. InSAR is becoming more and more popular in monitoring urban deformations, however, the technique requires advanced tools and high level competence to be successfully applied. In this paper we report important results obtained by analyzing new high resolution SAR data in the Shanghai urban area. The data used in this work have been acquired by the Italian X-band sensor Cosmo-SkyMed. About 1.2 million of individual and independent targets have been detected in 600 sq km, revealing impressive details of the ground surface deformation. Using the SARPROZ InSAR tool and integrating the results with Google Earth, we were able to track subway tunnels recently excavated and several highways. Tunnels are visible due to very localized subsidence of the above surface along their path. On the other hand, highways, standing over the ground, in most cases show higher stability than the surrounding areas. The density of targets is so high to allow studying the profile of the tunnel subsidence, which is very useful to predict building damage. Finally, the identification of targets on high buildings helps checking the stability of high constructions along the subway lines, highlighting possible risky situations. [Termes IGN] sédimentationRésumé : (Auteur) The advent of satellite remote sensing has provided a huge opportunity to geomorphologists to study the temporal dynamics of large rivers. The repetitive coverage of satellite data is an important archive to reconstruct historical-scale dynamics of large rivers and to understand the causal factors. In the lower reaches of the Ganga River around Farakka, natural as well as anthropogenic factors have influenced large-scale dynamics of the river during the last 234 years. The construction of the Farakka barrage was started in 1961 and was completed in 1971 except the feeder canal. The barrage was finally commissioned in 1975 but the serious problems of aggradation both upstream and downstream of the barrage had started much earlier resulting in significant changes in channel morphology and position. The channel upstream of the Farakka barrage has moved towards the east but channel shifting downstream of the Farakka barrage has been erratic. We argue that sedimentological readjustments due to aggradation and bar growth are the major factors influencing the river dynamics in this region. [Termes IGN] variationRésumé : (Auteur) As underpinned by various studies in the last years, temporal changes of the Earth’s gravity field contain a wealth of information on mass redistribution processes in the Earth’s system particularly associated with variations in continental water storage. By combining satellite and terrestrial observations with superconducting gravimeters (SG) a maximum of information can be gained due to the different temporal and spatial sampling. Esp. the cluster of superconducting gravimeters in central Europe is well suited for studies related to spatial and temporal changes in continental water storage. Due to the distribution of SG sites different sensitivities of the instruments are to be expected on changes in the various river and drainage basins which could, if sufficiently pronounced, be deployed to pinpoint areas in which main discrepancies between modelled and actual water storage changes occur and would thus allow us to fine-tune hydrological models. Based on the Water-Gap Global Hydrological Model (WGHM), this sensitivity of the SG observations is investigated. One compartment of the WGHM is surface water, thus comprising rivers, flooding areas, and major reservoirs. This contribution is given for the total cell of 0.5 0.5 and not localized, e.g. in a riverbed, therefore the question arises to which extent localization or non-localization of this compartment affects the estimate if the respective surface waters are in the vicinity of 50km around the SG stations. It can be shown, however, that the lateral distribution of the surface water masses plays only a negligible role for the central European stations meaning distributed surface water masses are an acceptable simplification when estimating hydrological effects. It emerges that variations in water storage in regions outside central Europe produce comparable effects on gravity at all sites and the impact of basins within central Europe is clearly distinguishable among the SG stations.
