[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Editeur) Research in the field of automated generalisation has faced new challenges in recent years as a result of technological developments in web-based processing, new visualisation paradigms and access to very large volumes of multi-source data generated by sensors and humans. In these contexts, map generalisation needs to underpin ‘on-demand mapping’, a form of mapping that responds to individual user requirements in the thematic selection and visualisation of geographic information. It is this new impetus that drives the research of the ICA Commission on Generalisation and Multiple Representation (for example through its annual workshops, biannual tutorials and publications in international journals). This book has a coherent structure, each chapter focusing on core concepts and tasks in the map generalisation towards on-demand mapping. Each chapter presents a state-of-the-art review, together with case studies that illustrate the application of pertinent generalisation methodologies. The book addresses issues from data gathering to multi scaled outputs. Thus there are chapters devoted to defining user requirements in handling specifications, and in the application and evaluation of map generalisation algorithms. It explores the application of generalisation methodologies in the context of growing volumes of data and the increasing popularity of user generated content. Note de contenu : 1. [Termes IGN] valeur ajoutéeRésumé : (auteur) A spatial data infrastructure (SDI) is an evolving concept for facilitating, coordinating and monitoring the exchange and sharing of geospatial data and services. In earlier work, we developed a formal model for an SDI from the Enterprise, Information and Computational Viewpoints of the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing. Within the Enterprise Viewpoint, we identified six stakeholders, including a Value-added Reseller (VAR), a stakeholder who adds value to an existing product or group of products, and then makes it available as a new product. A VAR is particularly important because they extend the usefulness of SDI products: high quality and useful VAR products help ensure continued funding by governments of publicly provided data. We engaged with various types of VAR around the world, to understand what encourages or inhibits VARs in an SDI, and the contributions VARs can make to an SDI. The results are described here. [Termes IGN] spécification de produitRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Research on generalisation algorithms mainly focused on the most prominent themes of a topographic map, namely roads, buildings, hydrography, terrain and land use. Now that many efficient algorithms exist for such prominent themes (Stanislawski et al. 2014), minor themes like ditches (Savino et al. 2011) or swamp patches (Anderson - Tarver et al. 2011) gain interest from the research community. In OpenStreetMap (OSM), the loose specifications resulted in a large range of unusual themes, e.g. electric lines (Figure 1c), and generalising maps out of OSM data requires to handle such unusual themes. Moreover, another particularity of OSM is the very high level of detail that can be found for some features, compared to traditional geographical databases, e.g. airports, port sites (Figure 1a) or parks (Figure 1b). The unusual details contained in such areas also require specific algorithms to preserve the structure and the relations between the components. Generalising OSM data is a challenging task (Sester et al. 2014) but this paper only focuses on the generalisation of those map themes or areas exhibited in OSM.
