[Termes IGN] texture du solRésumé : (auteur) Drone mapping with GNSS-assisted photogrammetry is a highly efficient method for surveying small- or medium-sized areas. However, the mapping quality is not intuitively predictable, particularly in complex environments (with steep and cluttered terrain), in which the quality of the real-time kinematic (RTK) or post-processed kinematic (PPK) positioning varies. We present a method to predict the mapping quality from the information that is available prior to the flight, such as the flight plan, expected flight time, approximate digital terrain model, prevailing surface texture, and embedded sensor characteristics. After detailing the important considerations, we also present the concept of global precision within the context of minimal and efficient ground control point placement in a complex terrain. Finally, we validate the proposed methodology by means of rigorous statistical testing against numerous experiments conducted under different mapping conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Archivists, historians and national mapping agencies, among others, are archiving large datasets of historical photographs. Nevertheless, the capturing devices used to acquire these images possessed a diversity of effects that influenced the quality of the final resulting picture, e.g. geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, depth of field variation, etc. This paper examines singularly the topic of geometric distortion for a co-visualization of historical photos within a 3D model of the photographed scene. A distortion function of an image is ordinarily estimated only on the image domain by adjusting its parameters to observations of point correspondences. This mathematical function may exhibit overfits, oscillations or may not be well defined outside of this domain. The contribution of this work is the description of a distortion model defined on the whole undistorted image plane. We extrapolate the distortion estimated only on the image domain and then transfer this distortion information to the view of the 3D scene. This enables to look at the scene through an estimated camera and zoom out to see the context around the original photograph with a well-defined and behaved distortion. These findings may be a significant addition to the overall purpose of creating innovative ways to examine and visualize old photographs. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (auteur) The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Terra spacecraft is completing two decades of successful Earth observations, providing the scientific community with numerous products and supporting applications, such as land surface cover, sea surface temperature, aerosol properties, and vegetation. The 20 reflective solar bands (RSBs) cover a wavelength range from 0.41 to 2.1 μm and are calibrated primarily using a solar diffuser (SD), with lunar measurements and Earth-view (EV) response trends from desert sites used for the response versus scan-angle (RVS) characterization. Prelaunch analysis showed that a few short-wavelength RSBs of Terra MODIS are particularly sensitive to the polarization of the incident light, with on-orbit results further indicating that the polarization sensitivity has experienced changes that are wavelength, mirror side (MS), and scan-angle dependent. Although the primary calibrator, the SD, should provide an unpolarized light, supplemental inputs from the EV response trends used in the RVS characterization are impacted by the Earth scene polarization. The EV trends, uncorrected for polarization, pose a significant challenge in the RVS characterization for the short wavelength bands (3, 8, 9, and 10), therefore impacting the long-term trends and uncertainty characterization. Previous studies from the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) have independently estimated the polarization correction to be applied on the calibrated products to mitigate the impacts to some extent. In this article, the RVS is characterized using the EV response trends after correcting for the polarization effects. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents an approach for Structure from Motion (SfM) for unorganized complex image sets. To achieve high accuracy and robustness, image triplets are employed and an (approximate) internal camera calibration is assumed to be known. The complexity of an image set is determined by the camera configurations which may include wide as well as weak baselines. Wide baselines occur for instance when terrestrial images and images from small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are combined. The resulting large (geometric/radiometric) distortions between images make image matching difficult possibly leading to an incomplete result. Weak baselines mean an insufficient distance between cameras compared to the distance of the observed scene and give rise to critical camera configurations. Inappropriate handling of such configurations may lead to various problems in triangulation-based SfM up to total failure. The focus of our approach lies on a complete linking of images even in case of wide or weak baselines. We do not rely on any additional information such as camera configurations, Global Positioning System (GPS) or an Inertial Navigation System (INS). As basis for generating suitable triplets to link the images, an iterative graph-based method is employed formulating image linking as the search for a terminal Steiner minimum tree in the line graph. SIFT (Lowe, 2004) descriptors are embedded into Hamming space for fast image similarity ranking. This is employed to limit the number of pairs to be geometrically verified by a computationally and more complex wide baseline matching method (Mayer et al., 2012). Critical camera configurations which are not suitable for geometric verification are detected by means of classification (Michelini and Mayer, 2019). Additionally, we propose a graph-based approach for the optimization of the hierarchical merging of triplets to efficiently generate larger image subsets. By this means, a complete, 3D reconstruction of the scene is obtained. Experiments demonstrate that the approach is able to produce reliable orientation for large image sets comprising wide as well as weak baseline configurations. [Termes IGN] spatiotriangulationRésumé : (auteur) High location accuracy is a major requirement for satellite image users. Target performance is usually achieved thanks to either specific on-board satellite equipment or an auxiliary registration reference dataset. Both methods may be expensive and with certain limitations in terms of performance. The Institut national de l’information géographique et forestière (IGN) and Airbus Defence and Space (ADS) have worked together for almost 20 years, to build reference data for improving image location using multi-satellite observations. The first geometric foundation created has mainly used SPOT 5 High Resolution Stereoscopic (HRS) imagery, ancillary Ground Control Points (GCP) and Very High Resolution (VHR) imagery, providing a homogenous location accuracy of 10m CE90 almost all over the world in 2010. Space Reference Points (SRP) is a new worldwide 3D GCP database, built from a plethoric SPOT 6/7 multi-view archive, largely automatically processed, with cloud-based technologies. SRP aims at providing a systematic and reliable solution for image location (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, VHR satellite imagery, High Altitudes Pseudo-Satellite…) and similar topics thanks to a high-density point distribution with a 3m CE90 accuracy. This paper describes the principle of SRP generation and presents the first validation results. A SPOT 6/7 smart image selection is performed to keep only relevant images for SRP purpose. The location of these SPOT 6/7 images is refined thanks to a spatiotriangulation on the worldwide geometric foundation, itself improved where needed. Points making up the future SRP database are afterward extracted thanks to classical feature detection algorithms and with respect to the expected density. Different filtering methods are applied to keep the best candidates. The last step of the processing chain is the formatting of the data to the delivery format, including metadata. An example of validation of SRP concept and specification on two tests sites (Spain and China) is then given. As a conclusion, the on-going production is shortly presented.
