[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) A terrestrial laser scanner measures the distance to an object surface with a precision in the order of millimeters. The quality of the individual points in a point cloud, although directly affecting standard processing steps like point cloud registration and segmentation, is still not well understood. The quality of a scan point is influenced by four major factors: instrument mechanism, atmospheric conditions, object surface properties and scan geometry. In this paper, the influence of the scan geometry on the individual point precision or local measurement noise is considered. The local scan geometry depends on the distance and the orientation of the scanned surface, relative to the position of the scanner. The local scan geometry is parameterized by two main parameters, the range, i.e. the distance from the object to the scanner and the incidence angle, i.e. the angle between incoming laser beam and the local surface normal. In this paper, it is shown that by studying the influence of the local scan geometry on the signal to noise ratio, the dependence of the measurement noise on range and incidence angle can be successfully modeled if planar surfaces are observed. The implications of this model is demonstrated further by comparing two point clouds of a small room, obtained from two different scanner positions: a center position and a corner position. The influence of incidence angle on the noise level is quantified on scans of this room, and by moving the scanner by 2 m, it is reduced by 20%. The improvement of the standard deviation is significant, going from 3.23 to 2.55 mm. It is possible to optimize measurement setups in such a way that the measurement noise due to bad scanning geometry is minimized and therefore contribute to a more efficient acquisition of point clouds of better quality. [Termes IGN] spline cubiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Camera calibration is a process whereby the geometric characteristics of a specific camera are determined. It is performed so that the photograph obtained can be used to produce accurate measurements. This paper presents a simple and accurate model for extracting the optical characteristics (intrinsic parameters) as well as the 3D position and orientation of the camera (extrinsic parameters) based on image coordinate measurements for targets of known 3-D position. The proposed algorithm is divided into two major steps. First, the behaviour of a grid of projected lines is studied and the required local corrections are applied. Such corrections are calculated using Composed Cubic Splines. This function covers radial, decentering and prism distortions. It provides a more realistic model of distortion which is represented as a composed surface. Then, calibration parameters are estimated using a pinhole model based on the minimization of a linear criterion relating the 3D coordinates of the targets with their 2D image projections. [Termes IGN] THEOSRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on the application of a generic physical sensor orientation model for evaluation of the georeferencing performance of 2 m resolution imagery from the Thailand Earth Observation System (THEOS) satellite. Within the generic sensor orientation model, orbit and attitude data are employed to describe the satellite trajectory, which is further modelled by splines. The satellite orbit and sensor attitude errors are then compensated via sensor orientation adjustment using a modest number of ground control points (GCPs), resulting in improved georeferencing. The generic sensor model and the integration of the THEOS orientation parameters into the model are first described. The presence of errors in the satellite line-of-sight data, which result in imprecise sensor interior orientation are then discussed. Such errors can be effectively accounted for through modelling via a cubic polynomial, leading to sub-pixel georeferencing accuracy. An account is then given of an experimental evaluation of THEOS georeferencing conducted in a well-established testfield near Melbourne, Australia. The results demonstrate that sub-pixel 2D geopositioning accuracy is readily achievable with single THEOS images and within strips of up to three images, with as few as six GCPs to effect an orbit adjustment. However, accuracy decreases to near the 2-pixel level over a strip length of five images. These kinds of images can be used in various applications that need high accuracy or fine texture. A novel approach is proposed for parallel processing of low-altitude images acquired by unpiloted aerial vehicles, which can automatically fly according to predefined flight routes under the control of an autopilot system. The general overlap and relative rotation angles between two adjacent images are estimated by overall matching with an improved scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) operator. Precise conjugate points and relative orientation parameters are determined by a pyramid-based least squares image matching strategy and the relative orientation process. Bundle adjustment is performed with automatically matched conjugate points and interactively measured ground control points. After this aerial triangulation process the high-resolution images can be used to advantage in obtaining precise spatial information products such as digital surface models, digital orthophotomaps and 3D city models. A parallel processing strategy is introduced in this paper to improve the computational time of the photogrammetric process. Experimental results show that the proposed approaches are effective for processing low-altitude images, and have high potential for the acquisition of spatial information at large mapping scales, with rapid response and precise modelling in three dimensions.
