[Termes IGN] fil à plombRésumé : (Auteur) Radial and decentring distortion parameters have long been reported as fundamental elements in camera calibration, especially in digital close range photogrammetry. This paper reports on an investigation for the determination of both radial and decentring distortion parameters using analytical plumb-line calibration. Straight line patterns, ranging from 1, 2, 4, 10 and up to 20 lines, not strictly plumb, are examined on a set of distorted imagery. Additionally, not only the number of straight lines but also the linear image distribution is analysed. For that purpose, linear features have been distributed in different positions and orientations over the whole of the imagery. Furthermore, the relationship between the parameters mentioned and the location of the principal point is also analysed, and shows how sensitive they are to deviations from the centre of the sensor. The motivation for this paper is the measurement of the minimum number of linear features for proper calibration of non-metric digital cameras. Both radial and decentring distortion parameters are examined. Finally, some line patterns are recommended for making the plumb-line calibration technique a reliable, easy and fast procedure. Photogrammetrists could use it as a first step in the procedure of camera calibration; users who are not experts in photogrammetry could employ it as a final step. It has five visible to near-infrared light sensitive cameras, one near-infrared to mid-infrared light sensitive camera, a monitor, a computer with a multichannel digitizing board, a keyboard, a power distributor, an amplifier, and a mouse. Each camera is fitted with a narrowband interference filter, allowing the system to obtain imagery in the blue (447 - 455 nm), green (555 - 565 nm), red (625 - 635 nm), red edge (704 - 716 nm), near-infrared (814-826 nm), and mid-infrared (1631 - 1676 nm) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Analogue video acquired by this system is converted to digital format. Radiometric resolution of the imagery is 8-bit (pixel values range 0 - 255). Images obtained by the system can be evaluated individually and/or in combination with each other to assess natural resources. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Mark Weiser is not exactly a household name. He was a chief technology officer at the Xerox Corporation's famous Palo Alto Research Center. This is the same outfit which brought us laser printing, Ethernet communications, the graphical user interface paradigm (including the mouse), and object-oriented programming. Like many of those who make a significant difference in technical fields, Mark Weiser's contributions are well known but his name is not. Dr. Weiser introduced the concept of "ubiquitous computing." He coined this term in 1988 to describe a new generation of the computer era, where the first two generations, that of the mainframe and the personal computer, would be superseded by one in which computers would disappear into the objects that surround us in our daily life both at the office and at home. He further posited that the best computer is a quiet, invisible servant whose "calm technology" informs us but doesn't demand our focus or attention. His idea, often tagged "UbiComp," has borne fruit and we now have smart coffee pots, smart printers, smart copy machines and the like, all connected via a wired or wireless network. Users of some of the smart devices in our UbiComp world, such as mobile telephones, personal digital assistants, cameras, and camcorders, would benefit by knowing their location wherever they might be - whether it's in an open field, on a street surrounded by skyscrapers, or inside an apartment building. As we all know, conventional GPS receivers don't always work where we would like them to. In order for a UbiComp device to know its position anywhere and anytime, we need "ubiquitous positioning" or UbiPos. And like UbiComp, UbiPos should inform us but not demand our focus or attention. In this month's column, we take a look at the available technologies that might be used to supplement conventional GPS positioning and some initial testing that will eventually lead to a UbiPos world, one in which we can locate anyone, anything, anytime, anywhere. This paper discusses two current approaches to ground-based cloud sensing: the prototype instrument used at ETH/MeteoSwiss within Cloudmap and Cloudmap2 for stereoscopy tests, and a Daylight Visible/NIR Whole Sky Imager (WSI) system developed and fielded by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The article includes descriptions of the radiometric and geometric calibration methods. Cloud amount, cloud-base height and cloud-base motion results from two ETH/MeteoSwiss measurement campaigns and from the operational WSI use at the German Weather Service (DWD) are shown. Finally, a case study with coincident satellite and ground data illustrates that ground-based digital imager systems are an interesting technique to validate satellite-based cloud-top heights and cloud-top motion winds of vertically thin clouds. [Termes IGN] Tsinghua (microsatellite)Résumé : (Auteur) By far the biggest source of the data needed for geospatial intelligence purposes comes from the high resolution imagery acquired from spaceborne and airborne platforms. In the specific context of South and East Asia, where there are numerous concerns about national security and threats from neighbours, the primary source for this type of intelligence is spaceborne imagery. Indeed the defence and security agencies in the larger countries in this part of Asia have all been large consumers of the high-resolution space imagery provided, by commercial suppliers such as GeoEye, DigitalGlobe, SPOT Image and ImageSat International. However, recently, nearly all of these Asian countries have either acquired or they are creating their own national capabilities to acquire this type of imagery to overcome the actual or potential restrictions and the delays that occur with the supply of space imagery from sources out with their control. The situation has already been discussed in a preliminary manner in an article published in Geolnformatics by the present writer three years ago (in the March 2004 issue) as part of his world wide survey of high-resolution imaging from space. This new article will concentrate on the many new developments that have taken place in the region since then.
