This paper describes a novel system for semi-automatic quality control of existing topographic geo-spatial data via automatic image analysis. The goal is to reduce the manual effort for quality control of a GIS database to a minimum. The core of the system is a semantic network in which different image analysis operators can be included. The image analysis operators are created for specific applications, i.e., the quality control of specific object classes which are most relevant. Images which can be used in the system are aerial images, high-resolution satellite imagery, and low-resolution satellite imagery. A prototype of the system has been in use for several years at public mapping organizations. From the experience gained during this time, we give a detailed report on the system performance and an evaluation of the results. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : cartographic generalisation constraints modelling spatial environment multi-agent communicative agents topographic data Résumé : (auteur) Our research is concerned with automated generalisation of topographic vector databases in order to produce maps. This article presents a new, agent-based generalization model called CARTACOM (Cartographic generalisation with Communicating Agents), dedicated to the treatment of areas of low density but where rubber sheeting techniques are not sufficient because some eliminations or aggregations are needed. In CARTACOM, the objects of the initial database are modelled as agents, that is, autonomous entities, that choose and apply generalisation algorithms to themselves in order to increase the satisfaction of their constraints as much as possible. The CARTACOM model focuses on modelling and treating the relational constraints, defined as constraints that concern a relation between two objects. In order to detect and assess their relational constraints, the CARTACOM agents are able to perceive their spatial surroundings. Moreover, to make the good generalisation decisions to satisfy their relational constraints, they are able to communicate with their neighbours using predefined dialogue protocols. Finally, a hook to another agent-based generalisation model – AGENT – is provided, so that the CARTACOM agents can handle not only their relational constraints but also their internal constraints. The CARTACOM model has been applied to the generalisation of low-density, heterogeneous areas like rural areas, where the space is not hierarchically organised. Examples of results obtained on real data show that it is well adapted for this application. [Termes IGN] New York (Etats-Unis ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) The urban landscape is dynamic and complex. As improved remote sensing data in terms of spatial and spectral characteristics became available, more sophisticated methods have been adopted for urban applications. This study proposed and evaluated a classification model incorporating feature selection, artificial immune networks and parameter optimization. Information gain, a broadly applied feature selection metric used in data mining techniques such as decision trees, was used for feature selection. Two types of information gain – binary-class entropy and multiple-class entropy – were investigated. Artificial immune networks have been recently applied to remote sensing classification and have been proven useful especially when multiple parameters of the networks are optimized through a genetic algorithm. The proposed model was tested for urban classification using hyperspectral (i.e. AISA and Hyperion) and LiDAR data over two urban study sites. Results show that the model considerably reduced processing time (70%) for classification without significant accuracy decrease. [Termes IGN] image hyperspectraleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we address the problem of semi-automatic definition of training sets for the classification of remotely sensed images. We propose two approaches based on active learning aiming at removing both the proximal (low diversity) and the dense (low exploration during iterations) sampling redundancies. The first is encountered when several samples carrying similar spectral information are selected by the algorithm, while the second occurs when the heuristic is unable to explore undiscovered parts of the feature space during iterations. For this purpose, kernel k-means is used to cluster a set of uncertain candidates in the same space spanned by the kernel function defined in the SVM classification step. Two heuristics are proposed to maximize the speed of convergence to high classification accuracies: The first is based on binary hierarchical partitioning of the set of selected uncertain samples, while the second extends this approach by considering memory in the selection and thus dynamically adapts to the problem throughout the iterations. Experiments on both VHR and hyperspectral imagery confirm fast convergence of the algorithm, that outperforms state-of-the-art sampling schemes.
