[Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we present a method to carry out a computerized epigraphic survey of historic stones and their engraved epigraphy. In fact, the preservation of archaeological objects has always been an issue of concern for the research community. On the one hand, the fragility of the objects limits their study. On the other hand, such objects are housed in museums, libraries, and institutions worldwide, locations that significantly limit their accessibility. Different survey methods have been carried out in these attempts to overcome the aforementioned limitations. Among them, the MicMac open source software was used in this work to survey and process the dense correlation of the hieroglyphics inscriptions engraved on archaeological stones. Relatively standard workflows have led to depth maps, which can be represented either as 3D point clouds or shaded relief images. This article shows the application of this method in two epigraphic survey case studies. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) This paper will explore the relation between maps and stories by looking at how meaning is construed from informational artifacts, and, in particular, from maps. A formal interpretation model, derived from the work of Erwin Panofsky, is applied to examine how meaning is brought to the map. The core issue is whether maps really do tell stories, or if that glib platitude hides a more complex relationship that would be advantageous to understand. [Termes IGN] OpenStreetMapRésumé : (Auteur) OpenStreetMap (OSM) thrives on allowing anyone in the world to contribute features to a free online geographical database, thereby allowing international mixes of contributors to create the map in any given place. Using South America as a test area, I explore the geography of OSM contributors by applying automated language identification to the free-form comments that contributors make when saving their work. By cross-referencing these languages with users' self-reported hometowns from their profiles, I evaluate the effectiveness of language detection as a method for inferring the percentage of local contributors versus the percentage of “armchair mappers” from elsewhere. I show that most English-speaking contributors to the South American OSM are from outside the continent (rather than multilingual locals). The percentage of English use is higher in poor areas and rural areas, suggesting that residents of these places exercise less control over their map contents. Finally, I demonstrate that some features related to daily needs of health, education, and transportation are mapped with higher priority by contributors who speak the local language. These findings give researchers and organizations a deeper understanding of the OSM contributor base and potential shortcomings that might affect the data's fitness for use in any given place. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (auteur) We propose a novel approach for semantic segmentation of building facades. Our system consists of three distinct layers, representing different levels of abstraction in facade images: segments, objects and architectural elements. In the first layer, the facade is segmented into regions, each of which is assigned a probability distribution over semantic classes. We evaluate different state-of-the-art segmentation and classification strategies to obtain the initial probabilistic semantic labeling. In the second layer, we investigate the performance of different object detectors and show the benefit of using such detectors to improve our initial labeling. The generic approaches of the first two layers are then specialized for the task of facade labeling in the third layer. There, we incorporate additional meta-knowledge in the form of weak architectural principles, which enforces architectural plausibility and consistency on the final reconstruction. Rigorous tests performed on two existing datasets of building facades demonstrate that we outperform the current state of the art, even when using outputs from lower layers of the pipeline. Finally, we demonstrate how the output of the highest layer can be used to create a procedural building reconstruction.
