[Termes IGN] tempêteRésumé : (auteur) Most flood hazards are induced either by river overflowing or intense overland flow following heavy rainfall, causing land surface damages under many forms. Until now, fine-scale detection of damages caused by intense rainwater runoff beyond the direct vicinity of major waterways has been scarcely explored using satellite remote sensing. In this work, three extreme storms in the Aude and Alpes-Maritimes departments in the South of France were investigated based on ground truths and very high resolution optical imagery (Pléiades satellite, IGN orthophotos). Plot delineation and land use information were combined to high revisit frequency and high resolution optical (Sentinel-2) and SAR (Sentinel-1) open-source data to test a simple automatic and replicable change detection method to locate damaged plots using supervised classification. Based on a unique training sample from the Aude floods of October 2018, combinations of plot-based spectral indicators allowed reaching overall detection accuracies greater than 85% on independent validation samples for all three events. A simple land use inter-class demeaning pre-processing used to account for land-specific seasonal variations improved event and site repeatability by lowering false detection rates down to a maximum of 13%. The benefits of introducing SWIR channel in addition to visible and near-infrared indices were limited to a few percentage points. SAR-derived proxies of soil moisture and roughness in weakly vegetated areas were consistent with the presence of degradations, with VV being the most sensitive polarization. However, classification accuracy was not significantly increased with Sentinel-1 data as compared to the exclusive use of Sentinel-2. Additional tests revealed that should the closest available optical images be rather distant in time because of persistent cloud cover, the method is reasonably robust as long as stable ground conditions were observed before the event. The need for images close in time was however emphasized through cross-site training. Indeed, efficient replicability from one site to another relied on using unaffected learning plots with slightly more inherent variability in time variations of spectral indices compared to the test site. Beyond the investigation of three case studies, this work demonstrates the performance and repeatability potential of a new probabilistic change detection method to expose various kinds of extreme rainfall-related disturbances, in particular those occurring far from the main hydrographic network. Should spatially accurate rainfall products be available, comprehensive mapping of intense stormwater runoff hazards using this original plot-based approach will then allow improving the understanding of overland flow generation mechanisms in hydrological models. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This research sheds light on the relationship between the presence of location-based social network (LBSN) data and other economic and demographic variables in the city of Valencia (Spain). For that purpose, a comparison is made between location patterns of geolocated data from various social networks (i.e., Google Places, Foursquare, Twitter, Airbnb and Idealista) and statistical information such as land value, average gross income, and population distribution by age range. The main findings show that there is no direct relationship between land value or age of registered population and the amount of social network data generated in a given area. However, a noteworthy coincidence was observed between Google Places data-clustering patterns, which represent the offer of economic activities, and the spatial concentration of the other LBSNs analyzed, suggesting that data from these sources are mostly generated in areas with a high density of economic activities. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Information on carbon stocks and the rate of carbon accumulation is needed to harness the climate change mitigation potential of boreal forests. While previous studies have revealed general patterns and mechanisms for age-dependence of stand biomass, simple stand-level models that address the age-biomass relationship on average in managed boreal forests in different environmental conditions are largely missing. We developed models for the relationship between stand age and biomass by forest types on peatlands and mineral soils across climate zones in managed forests in Finland based on National Forest Inventory measurements from 1996 to 2018. In addition, we analyzed at which rate biomass accumulates when managed forest ages in different growth conditions. In northern Finland the maximum biomass change rate was one third, and the maximum biomass stock less than half of the corresponding values in sub-xeric heath forests on minerals soils in southern Finland. On drained peatlands the maximum biomass growth rate was approximately half, and on undrained peatlands one third of the maximum growth rate on mineral soils. On most fertile sites on mineral soils the maximum biomasses were three times larger than on the poorest sites. Correspondingly, the maximum biomass stock change rates were almost eight times faster on most fertile sites. In the example cases presented, the highest annual biomass change rates were achieved in young forests on average at the stand ages of 7–32 years, whereas the 95% of the maximum stock were reached on average in stands of 63–147 years. At the age of highest biomass growth rate stands contained 27–59% of the maximum biomass stocks. The developed models can be used in practical applications such as accounting of biogenic carbon in life-cycle assessments, mapping carbon, or creating simple predictions of biomass stock development in regions, or estimating the mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation or estimating the magnitude of carbon offsets projects. [Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) The article presents changes in the topography of the Toruń area due to the degradation of dunes by human activity, and a reconstruction of their earlier location and morphology. The reconstruction was made on the basis of historical maps and plans from the end of the eighteenth century, as well as contemporary cartographic materials and digital terrain models (DTM). Analysis of the sources showed that the main period of anthropogenic degradation of dunes in the city was the second half of the twentieth century. The balance of changes in the share of dunes within city limits is estimated to be a decrease of about 26.5% over the study period, and by around 60.2% in the part that is presently urbanised. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (auteur) Integrating heterogeneous geospatial data sources is important in various domains like smart cities, urban planning and governance, but remains a challenging research problem. In particular, the production of high-quality integrated data from multiple sources requires an understanding of their respective characteristics and a systematic assessment of the consistency within and between the data sources. In order to perform the assessment, the data has to be placed on a common ground. However, in practice, heterogeneous geodata are often provided in diverse formats and organized in significantly different structures. In this work, we propose a framework that uses an ontology-based approach to overcome the heterogeneity by means of a domain ontology, so that consistency rules can be evaluated at the unified ontological representation of the data sources. In our case study, we use open governmental data from Open Data Portals (ODPs) and volunteered geographic information from OpenStreetMap (OSM) as two test data sources in the area of the province of South Tyrol, Italy. Our preliminary experiment shows that the approach is effective in detecting inconsistencies within and between ODP and OSM data. These findings provide valuable insights for a better combined usage of these datasets.
