[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Thoughtful consideration of the enumeration unit size in choropleth map design is important to ensure the correct communication of spatial information. However, the enumeration unit size and its influence on pattern conveying in choropleth maps have not yet been the subject of in-depth empirical studies. This research aims to address this gap. We focused on the issue concerning whether the ability to recognize spatial patterns on an Equal Area Unit Map is related to the hexagonal enumeration unit size, defined by the number of pixels. The aim is to indicate the range of the enumeration unit sizes, namely, at what point the upper and lower borders of the range where the spatial patterns start, and where the end is visible and recognizable by users. To address this problem, we conducted an empirical study with 488 users. The results show that the enumeration unit size has an impact on the users’ spatial pattern recognition abilities. Choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 26, 52, and 104 pixels were, in the majority, indicated by participants as those most suitable for indicating spatial patterns. This was in contrast to choropleth maps with enumeration unit sizes of 1664 and 3328 pixels, which users indicated as not being useful. However, there were some exceptions to this general finding. Thus, determining the optimal enumeration unit size is a challenging task, and requires further insightful investigations. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Burgos, in Spain, due to its geographical and historical importance, which made it a politically, militarily, and administratively key city in the configuration of Spain throughout the history of the country, has a large amount of cartographic documentation. Therefore, it has been necessary to carry out different phases of work to collect and analyze the cartographic material available, as well as to specify the maps and plans that would be used to convey and structure the cartography of Burgos during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However, we must take into account in any study that, despite advances in technology, including machines used to digitize these artifacts, there remains a degree of error, so the display of the map that the researcher observes is not as reliable as it should be. Taking into account the hypothetical character of the accuracy of the maps collected and used in this study, and in order to achieve its goals, a thematic analysis through selection, geolocation, and comparison with the current city map based on different criteria is proposed. Thanks to the rich material, this case can be extrapolated to other cities in the country and the process of making up a map during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can be known in a deeper way. [Termes IGN] SlovénieRésumé : (auteur) Various possibilities for collecting volunteer-provided geographical information in geodesy make it possible to engage volunteers for different purposes. In this paper, a study of the willingness of volunteers to report changes on topographic maps based on an online survey is presented. The survey was answered by 653 Slovenian respondents who use various online or classic topographic maps in their free time or at work and are willing to report their knowledge of changes in space or errors in maps to the map-updating institution. The survey's main finding is that 56% of respondents would use any online application to report changes on maps, 38% of respondents would prefer to report changes via email, and only 4% of respondents would prefer to report changes by phone. We also analysed the potential use of different functionalities of a web application for collecting changes and found that the most important functionalities for volunteers are those that give the most in-depth feedback (i.e., that a contribution has been submitted, that it is being verified, that it has been considered, that it has been deleted). The willingness of potential volunteers to use the various proposed functionalities also frequently depends on their current involvement with social networking sites or in volunteer associations and on their age group. This paper uses the idea of line simplification to typify linear building groups. Firstly, based on the stroke idea, the linear building groups are detected that each building group is related by only one stroke; the collinear and curvilinear patterns are distinguished by calculating the overlap rate between the defined auxiliary polygon and its oriented bounding box. Secondly, the stroke is simplified by removing one node in each iterative step; and the remained nodes are reallocated to the new positions, which serves as the centroids location of the newly typified buildings. Third, the representation (size, shape, elongation, and orientation) of the newly typified buildings are calculated by the geometry information of their corresponding parent buildings. The typification method can be carried out as a progressive process, which iterates over the three steps to derive continuous typification results. The method is tested on two building datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve good performance by well preserving the original linear patterns in the generalized building groups.
