[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Data collection for forest planning in private forestry in Finland is based on periodic, labour-intensive, stand level field inventories. Therefore, to increase guidance for forest owners more cost-efficient methods that replace or supplement field inventories are needed so as to reallocate labour resources. In addition, for active forest owners, up-to-date information is of interest. The aim of this thesis was to test the applicability of different inventory and updating methods that are based on aerial photography for the regional forest inventory of private forests in Finland. Four approaches were chosen: I) stand level visual interpretation of changes and simulation of stand development, 2) automatic, stand level interpretation of aerial photographs utilising nonparametric estimation, 3) automatic, photogrammetric estimation of mean height, and 4) automatic, monoscopic identification of individual trees. Approaches I and 2 are inventory or updating methods, while approaches 3 and 4 can be considered as components of such methods. Approach 1 was found to be appropriate for operative use for estates that have not ordered a forest plan, provided that the strict prerequisites for the inventory area are met. The- accuracy of approach 2, as such, was not considered to be high enough for forest planning, but this very inexpensive method could turn out to be applicable, if its accuracy could be improved. Approach 3 was based on image matching and would be most useful as a part of other methods, like template matching in multiple images. Although only identification of trees was tested in approach 4, the applicability of whole single tree based inventory method was appraised. Relatively high costs and low accuracy limit the possibilities to use this method, in practice. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) A variety of indices have been proposed to facilitate the quantitative analysis in remote sensing applications. The assessment of land development is important for minimizing development impacts and formulating alternative development plans. Much attention has been paid to the quantity of land use changes in general development assessment using remote sensing. However, additional information can be obtained from remote sensing and GIS for revealing land use problems more effectively. This paper presents four indicators, quantity, quality, location, and morphology to characterize land development patterns for fast-growing regions. A four-component efficiency index is further developed for ranking purposes to reflect economic and environmental considerations. The implementation of the method has been demonstrated in a fast-growing region in south China. Efforts have been made to verify the model with independent empirical data. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Editeur)This is a book that recognizes the growing commonality between the concerns of science, government, and business. The examples of GIS people and problems that are scattered through this book have been chosen deliberately to illuminate this commonality, as well as the interplay between organizations and people from different sectors. To differing extents, the five sections of the book develop common concerns with effectiveness and efficiency, by bringing together information from disparate sources, acting within regulatory and ethical frameworks, adhering to scientific principles, and preserving good reputations. This, then, is a book that combines the basics of GIS with the solving of problems which often have no single, ideal solution - the world of business, government, and interdisciplinary, mission-orientated holistic science.
In short, we have tried to create a book that remains attuned to the way the world works now, that understands the ways in which most of us increasingly operate as knowledge workers, and that grasps the need to face complicated issues that do not have ideal solutions. As with the first edition of the book, this is an unusual enterprise and product. It has been written by a multinational partnership, drawing upon material from around the world. One of the authors is an employee of a leading software vendor and two of the other three have had business dealings with ESRI over many years. Moreover, some of the illustrations and examples come from the customers of that vendor. We wish to point out, however, that neither ESRI (nor Wiley) has ever sought to influence our content or the way in which we made our judgments, and we have included references to other software and vendors throughout the book. Whilst our lab classes are part of ESRI's Virtual Campus, we also make reference to similar sources of information in both paper and digital form. [...]Note de contenu :
