Famous global mapping services such as ArcGIS Online, Bing Maps, Google Maps, or Yandex Maps can provide users with address information of any geographic coordinates using reverse geocoding. The accuracy of retrieved addresses is quite essential for a service user. Several researchers have evaluated the accuracy of the process based on the positional errors between the retrieved and actual addresses. This article proposes a different assessment based on text similarity algorithms. In this study, the authors examine the outcomes of 15 different text similarity algorithms by comparing them with the reference data. They benefit from the binary logistic regression to evaluate the results. At the end of the case study, they conclude that the soft-term frequency/inverse document frequency algorithm is the most appropriate to measure the quality of postal addresses of all tested services. The Jaccard algorithm also produces successful results only for Google and Bing Maps services. Moreover, the study allows the reader to assess the results of reverse geocoding derived from the global map platforms that serve in the test region. [Termes IGN] régularisation de TychonoffRésumé : (auteur) The Earth observation using remote sensing is one of the most important technologies to assimilate key attributes about the Earth’s surface. To achieve tangible consequence, the internal building blocks of such a complex system must operate flawlessly. However, due to a dynamically changing environment, degradation in sensor electronics, and extreme weather condition remotely sensed images often miss essential information. As the sensors operate over several years in space the likelihood of sensor degradation persists. This results in commonly observed issues, such as stripe noise, missing partial data, and missing band. Various ground-based solutions have been developed to address these technological bottlenecks individually. In this article, we devise a method, which we call ALERT, to tackle missing band reconstruction. The proposed method reconstructs the missing band with the sole supervision of spectral and spatial priors. We compare the proposed framework with state-of-the-art methods and show compelling improvement both qualitatively and quantitatively. We provide both theoretical and empirical evidence of better performance by regularized adversarial learning as compared to complete supervision. Furthermore, we propose a new residual-dense-block (RDB) module to preserve geometric fidelity and assist in efficient gradient flow. We show that ALERT captures essential features such that the spatial and spectral characteristics of the reconstructed band remains preserved. To critically analyze the generalization we test the performance on two different satellite data sets: Resourcesat-2A and WorldView-2. As per our extensive experimentation, the proposed method achieves 20.72%, 13.81%, 1.05%, 15.91%, and 2.94% improvement in the root mean square error (RMSE), SAM, SSIM, PSNR, and SRE, respectively, over the state-of-the-art model. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Background: Under ongoing climate and land-use change, biodiversity is continuously decreasing and monitoring biodiversity is becoming increasingly important. National Forest Inventory (NFI) programmes provide valuable time-series data on biodiversity and thus contribute to assessments of the state and trends in biodiversity, as well as ecosystem functioning. Data quality in this context is of paramount relevance, particularly for ensuring a meaningful interpretation of changes. The Swiss NFI revisits about 8%–10% of its sample plots regularly in repeat surveys to supervise the quality of fieldwork.
Methods: We analysed the relevance of observer bias with equivalence tests, examined data quality objectives defined by the Swiss NFI instructors, and calculated the pseudo-turnover (PT) of species composition, that is, the percentage of species not observed by both teams. Three attributes of woody species richness from the latest Swiss NFI cycles (3 and 4) were analysed: occurrence of small tree and shrub species (1) on the sample plot and (2) at the forest edge, and (3) main shrub and trees species in the upper storey.
Results: We found equivalent results between regular and repeat surveys for all attributes. Data quality, however, was significantly below expectations in all cases, that is, as much as 20%–30% below the expected data quality limit of 70%–80% (proportion of observations that should not deviate from a predefined threshold). PT values were about 10%–20%, and the PT of two out of three attributes decreased significantly in NFI4. This type of uncertainty – typically caused by a mixture of overlooking and misidentifying species – should be considered carefully when interpreting change figures on species richness estimates from NFI data.
Conclusions: Our results provide important information on the data quality achieved in Swiss NFIs in terms of the reproducibility of the collected data. The three applied approaches proved to be effective for evaluating the quality of plot-level species richness and composition data in forest inventories and other biodiversity monitoring programmes. As such, they could also be recommended for assessing the quality of biodiversity indices derived from monitoring data.
